Default What is 'aging toner' on a top?

Wonder how many spray tan haters dye their hair....

I go by looks and if it looks good, I’m in. I ain’t gonna turn down a 9 because her tan is not real...among other things...

Default aging

My M38, bought in 1978, had what Martin called "aging toner". When I sold it in 2005, it had aged further and was on the orangish side.

Why "haters"? That seems a bit strong. Not preferring something and "hating" are very different. I don't dye my hair and don't know anybody who does, but then I don't ask either.

I do agree with you that if it looks good, it is fine with me. However, we all have at least somewhat different ideas as to what we think looks good. It is entirely possible that many folks here like the coloring of the top on the Clapton model guitar, where I don't care for it. Others may not care for guitars that I prefer.

1981 HD-28 Custom Shop, "M-38 toner" which is near identical to current "Vintage Toner".

I hate white tops...
I prefer either a nicely done brown/red/black sunburst.
Or a darker finish, like is widely used in classical guitars.

Because "haters" tend to have the louder voice regarding "fake tans." I wasn't trying to be malicious, but being someone who likes aging toner, I do get sick of having my guitar belittled because of her fake tan. She treats me real good, tan or no tan. And you can't have her, she's mine! lol

I love white tops because underneath one of em is a CS-OM-13 and underneath the other is a SCGC OM Adi/BRW. Sadly both will age all by themselves over time, perhaps I'll be willing to let them go by the time they've aged but I don't think so.

Even a clear varnish deepens the tint of dry wood. Many guitars have a light tint added to the finish and you wouldn't even know it. They just look good. Nothing wrong with tints in a wood finish - many woods look even better with a little tint.

One man's opinion here, but to me it has nothing to do with "mojo". I just like the way it looks. YMMv.

There is Aging Toner (lighter, yellower) and Vintage Toner (darker, oranger).

Martin uses them both on various models.

This is Aging Toner on my three year old OM28-V. I love the looks. I bought this instrument for how great it sounds... the good looks were just the frosting on top.

As with different types of finishes, there is nothing right nor wrong about stains and toners. They are used extensively throughout the wood musical instrument industry and of course, as with everything else, some people love it, some are indifferent, and some don't care for it.

Choose the finish that appeals to you and enjoy it.

This looks exactly like the top of my custom shop 00-18. I absolutely love it.
