Firesign theatre quote? You must be old....
Hah! Yup, I'm old enough to remember the Firesign Theatre. I think I have all of their albums on vinyl.

Yeah I was in a hurry and misquoted the article but in my defense the link contained the correct information. I’ll blame it on age. LOL

Mine states "M6 Spruce" on the gold Seagull logo off to the right side of the label.

Incidentally, the M stands for mahogany, which is the mahogany/cherry laminate of the back and sides.
The 6 designates the number of strings, of course.

I have the satin finish...I forget what the called it back then, so it's not just you who is getting forgetful. ... but it seems to have darkened considerably over the years so I wouldn't use color alone to determine the type of wood. It's much darker than another spruce topped guitar I bought new ealier this year.

BTW, somewhere I have the formula for determining the date of manufacture by the serial number. If you're interested, I'll dig it up and post it.
Thanks - I looked but my label just says M6 Gloss - I did send an email to Seagull referencing the serial number - hopefully they can look it up. I know the date, in fact I still have my receipt from 2002. My buying process was to ignore brand names and specs , just get the guitar that sounded best to me, among the $400 class guitars that were in the store. The Seagull was $379 and I have been enjoying it for fifteen years. Bargain. Seemed like the bass response was way stronger than any other guitar I tried.

Had them too, in high school. Which was a while ago, to say the least.

Thank you. Spruce seems to be the consensus. I emailed Seagull - waiting for a response.

Thank you. Luckily my fingers still function most of the time. Though mostly I play electric so the acoustic tires them out faster.

In case anyone is interested, I found the info on Seagull Serial Numbers...

The First 2 digits designate the model year, which starts on August 1st of the previous year.
Ex: "02" for instance, would mean the 2002 model year which started 8/1/2001.

The Second 2 digits designate the week of the model year that the guitar was made.
Ex: So "40" means the 40th week after 8/1/2001.

The Third digit designated the day of the production week that the guitar was made.
Ex: "4" means Thursday.

The last three digits designate the number of guitars that were built that production week.
Ex: "230" means that this guitar was the 230th guitar built during that production week.

None of which answers your question of what your particular guitar top is made of...

Incidentally, using this information, I found my M6 Spruce was built on May 29, 2002.

I also found this, from an old flyer...

I'm not sure if it's exactly contemporary to our guitars, though. It doesn't mention the flat finish I have on my M6 Spruce which I don't think was offered for any length of time and may have been discontinued by the time this info was released.

It looks the the M6 Gloss models were Spruce tops only, though.

Getting back to the color of the top...Even though my M6 is Spruce, by now it's already darkened to the point where it looks much more like the cedar guitar in the flyer.

That logic works on their eight digit serial numbers. But they had <8 digits on older guitars, and they've now moved to a 12-digit system, where six of the numbers are the model and the last six are the number of that model that have been produced. Unfortunately, it removed the ability to determine the age on any guitar made in the last 10 years.
