Thanks for the advice everyone..
Yes.. unfortunately I'm sticking with Taylor's and Martin's. I know the others are fine guitars too, but I like what I like.
A friend of mine is pushing me towards a used Martin DM.. he says it's every bit as good as the custom D. (And it sold for the same price when it was new). Those are a lot cheaper so it's tempting. (Laminate backs)
The Taylor 410 is really nice, but the Martin Custom D has that classic look. I guess what I've learned here is that there is no clear winner, and each guitar has its merits.

With those parameters in mind, I'd go buy a used Taylor DN3 or 310 for under $800 or a used Martin D16 from the late 80's or very early 90's for $1000. There is no reason to be considering laminate back and sides when you can find either of those in your price range.

Save up an additional 100 or 200 (if needed in the USA) and go Eastman E8d, E10d or E20d (sitka/rosewood - adi/mahogany - adi/rosewood respectively). Best dreads that money can buy.

He already said he wants a Martin or a Taylor only...his choices.
My guess is it's a headstock thing from his posts. That's perfectly fine, it's his money.

Where are you located? If you put your location in your profile people could recommend a shop within driving distance.

You can find a used Taylor 314ce well under $1K. That would be my choice in that price range.

Martin and Taylor are two very, very different beasts, even when you're comparing one dread to another. Just something to consider.

You beat me to the punch. The OP says he know what he likes, but I wonder does he really know that the two have very different tones? The classic "Taylor sound" is very bright trebles, whereas the Martin classic sound will be warmer and less edgy than a Taylor. If you like the Martin sound, an Eastman or Larrivee will come close. If you like Taylor, you'll probably need to search for a Taylor. No mention yet if he likes spruce over rosewood, spruce over mahogany, which opens up a whole 'nuther can of worms.

I sold my well played 2016 D18 a couple weeks back because I couldn't get used to the thin neck profile. I replaced it with a killer 2017 Eastman E6D, and I couldn't be happier. The 6D is still new, and it sounds a little brighter and tighter than the D18. It is already just as loud, if not louder. It has a full C neck profile and a true 1 3/4" nut.

This isn't a "for the money" judgement, but I have to admit that I like the 6D better than the D18, both tonally and ergonomically. Go figure.

I also bought an E6D last year (demo model $569) and I wouldn't sell it for $1000 (or even twice that) At least the OP might want to check them out. Visually it is very, very similar to a Martin D18 and tonally it is close, but is it's own sound. Best values on the market IMO.

I’m probably the biggest Taylor dreadnought fan around here and you could find a great 3 or 4 series in your budget. I also like the martin 16 and 15 series in that price range.

I know you said those two brands are what you like, but I’d also suggest a Westerly made Guild dreadnought. Those older Guilds sound awesome and there’s lots of choices in your price range. Also something different, a Gibson Gospel or J30 are awesome dreads.

They're excellent guitars.

For the past ten or twelve years they've come from the factory with tortoiseshell pickguards, while the older one have clear pickguards:

Larrivée D-03

Hope this helps.

I agree with Wade. I'd still have my D-03 if it had a wider string spacing. So much guitar for the $...

I agree. Apple Pie and Chocolate cake taste completely different, but I like both of those things too.
I used to live down the road from the Martin factory in PA.. so there is a nostalgia thing with Martins. I'm an old hippie too, so I like Taylor's sustainable resource efforts as well.
I should also add that I'm better at buying guitars than I am at playing them.

Have you tried to get a price from one of the AGF sponsors? I'm willing to bet they can meet your price point pretty readily.
