Entry Level Mic best for Fingerstyle?
Hi All.
I just acquired a 1919 Martin 00-21 and it plays and sounds like a dream. I would like to use it for fingerstyle during gigs. However, I do not want to install an on board pickup. I am looking to purchase a decent entry-level mic to use during live performances. Not planning to record at present but that may be in my future. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. |

Not sure of your budget, but if you can find a Blue Encore 300 you'll not do much better for the money. Been through several dozen mics, and that's the one that stayed....

That certainly would depend on your budget.
Modestly priced SD condensers would include: 1) Oktava MC-012 with hypercardiod capsule (extra points for Joly or Dorsey mod); 2) 3 Zigma CHI with hypercardiod capsule; and 3) Telefunken (USA) M62 (again, a hypercardioid capsule). All of these mics have the capability of using different capsules with the mic amp body. So you can add a cardioid SD capsule, or an omni SD capsule. With the Oktava and 3 Zigma brands, you can add several different LD capsules too. None of these mic amp bodies have a bass rolloff switch, so your downstream signal chain will require sufficient bass rolloff and eq to handle positioning and venue issues. |

Can't a SM57 or Audix i5 be a decent solution for live performances?

I'd start with an SM57. Relatively inexpensive, solid, reliable. I had the good fortune to be offered a support slot for Stefdan Grossman a couple of years back and he still mics up with a 57.

Audio-Technica Pro 37

These can be found used for around $100, and they are exceptional. For micing an acoustic they out perform anything else I've tried in the "up to $250" price range.
