Newby tuning question
Hey everybody,
I have what I hope is a pretty simple question. I've recently started experimenting with alternate tunings, and today I tuned up to open E. Is it OK to leave the guitar tuned up above standard tuning? Should I relax some string tension until the next time I play? The guitar is a Martin 000 28 EC. Wondering if there is any danger to the guitar leaving it with increased string tension. TIA, Chris. |

Why not open D and capo? Perhaps you like the extra zing of the higher tension. Personally I'm chicken and hate to tune strings up to higher pitches. IMO it would be safest to use light or extra light gauge strings and tune back down when not playing it.

I'd also steer clear of tuning UP, especially leaving it that way. I think the last suggestion of open D with a capo is an excellent suggestion. You can play in any open key you want that way.

Thanks for the help. This is the solution I had arrived at on my own. Tuning up that far kind of gave me the willies.
