Default Guitars Can Sometimes Be Substitutes For....

I am going to let you fill in the blank. Of course, we love our guitars simply for themselves, and the music we make with them. But just sometimes, don't you find yourself using them to fill some other void in your life? I admit that I do.

So.......for me, sometimes my guitars are a substitute for.....love.
That's as much as I am willing to admit at this time. Not saying which kind, or anything further on the subject.

So, what void do your guitars fill for you?

Playing the guitar satisfies my need to create and always presents a challenge as there is always a song to be learned.

the need to simplify ones life (as I sit here wirelessly connected to the Internet from my laptop). With all the technology that our daily lives are infused with and at an ever increasing rate of change, the guitar, more specifically the acoustic guitar, is a welcome retreat to a more elemental, more constant and humanistic form of communication.

sometimes...I find myself doing other things for myself and not for or even with my kids.

So the guitar is sometimes used to sing worship (or other times silly) songs with them...and to spend time with them.

These are good! Another one for me is scenic beauty, which is somewhat lacking in my immediate living area. My guitars are beautiful to look at.

Well, in my case lately, guitars have become substitutes for:
Expensive fountain pens
QVC/HSN jewelry purchases
Stereo equipment
Case lots of classed-growth Bordeaux
Necessary home repairs
and....
a live backup band

I wouldn't call it a substitute, but one of the reasons I'm drwn to the guitar is that it feels so alive in my hands and under my fingers when I play, and my partner when I sing.If it's a sub for anything it is a friend.

I just counted it up, and as of today, I have 265 cold-turkey, no patch, no gum, just-plain-quit, tobacco-free days behind me and I couldn't have done it without my guitars! Only 100 days to go to an entire year! So I guess you could say I use my guitars as a substitute for tobacco.

Painting.

I've had artist's block for years now, and fortunately/unfortunately, the guitar has taken over.

Gee my answer was going to be similar to Rebecca's 'love' so I'll just say 'women' instead

Yeah, if I was to be honest, I'd probably say something similar. Sometimes for me it can be the expression of it too.

And that's all I'M saying on the subject too!!

often, my guitars are substitutes for TV, which my love (wife) likes to watch and I don't...so, I guess that would be sub for a friend/lover or a boredom eraser......good thing we have extra rooms in the house

Sugarbear, good work!

Hey - well done Sugar Bear!!! Keep at it.

My guitars allow me to feel my life is more complete. They are the (only) outlet for my artistic and creative side. I work as a systems analyst in a manufacturing company and there are precious few creative opportunities there. I'm not sure if that makes them a tool or a substitute.

Also - my guitar acts like an "overflow valve" when I get too emotional about things. Picking the guitar up for a while helps me cool down and get things back in perspective.
Hmmm. So maybe my guitar is a substitute for a therapist? But a lot cheaper

There are a couple main voids for me...

One is... I had a bit of a drug problem up until 1983 which included using needles and primarily meth. I get a much better high when i am making music than i ever got from any drug i ever used. And... It can't hurt me, and don't cost anything (well... GAS is pretty expensive... ). I'm not saying that i would ever do drugs again if i did'nt play the guitar, because I NEVER WILL!

Another is... I am a Software Developer by profession, and after using the logical side of my brain for two thirds of my waiking hours, it's nice to play my guitar and use the creative side of my brain. I think it keeps my brain balanced...

As for this...
