Default Remember that video game "The Gauntlet"? Was there an end?

I woke up this morning with a weird question. Do you guys remember the video game called "The Gauntlet"? (circa 1985)

The players could be Valkarie, the Wizard, the Elf, or the Warrior. It was one of the first games where 4 people could play at once.

Here's a screenshot:

Was there actually an end to this game or was it set up on some sort of loop? Did the NES version actually have an end? Did the arcade version? We would usually just play it until we got bored.

Just curious to see if anyone knew if there was an end to either the arcade version or the NES version of this game.

Q: Does Gauntlet I have an ending? A: No. I have played Gauntlet I to
level 999 and beyond. After level 999, the next level is level 8 (it
wraps around).

In my soon-to-be-wild teens video game arcades were very popular and were generally pretty nicely furnished. One night I blew a bunch of money with three other people standing around a tabletop version of Gauntlet.

Dragon after dragon, level after level, hour after hour. No end.

But it was still kinda fun.

Did you know that there was actually and end to Galaga? The game completely locked up at stage 255.
