Question Best combo tube amp under $600

My friend is finally taking the plunge and looking to purchase a tube amp. His budget is a little low, but I promised I would find him the best amp for that price range. He recently purchased a Gibson Les Paul Studio 50's Tribute with stock P-90s. His musical style, I would consider alternative (i.e. Alakline Trio, Rise Against). Definitely going to a purchase a 'nice' overdrive/distortion pedal down the road to make up for that extra needed crunch.

I currently own an early model Goodsell Super 17. He loves the simplicity of the controls and wattage. The amp would mostly be used in a home setting, so wattage needs to be under 15 watts MAX.

With all that being said, I would love hear suggestions for amps in that price range both USED and NEW condtion.

What do used reissue Fender Deluxe Reverb Amps go for? I know used hand wired silverface Deluxe Reverb Amps can be found for under a grand. The reissue is not handwired and uses a printed circuit board and is less desireable because of that and also because it's not vintage but they still sound about the same. If you're going to use pedals to achieve distortion and overdrive, a used DR Reissue might be a good choice. The DR and the Princeton Reverb are my favorite small amps of all time. The DR is plenty loud enough for most gigs but also great at home.

Among the ones to consider are the Peavey Delta Blues with a 15" speaker, the Carvin Vintage 16 and the Peavey Classic 30. I like the Fender Blues Deluxe but it is a bit over your budget unless it is a used one.

I once tried an older model Randall combo tube amp that was good. The Randall RD50C, which I've neither played nor seen might also be one to consider.

Gotta agree with the Peavey recommendation.

It wouldn't hurt to throw this into the mix:

New and used Fender Deluxe and Princeton Reverb reissue are either side of your budget.

Look at craigslist and for shops that carry used gear and you'll find something great.

The Blues Jr. really is a sweet amp... it breaks up nicely without excessively high volumes.

+1. This is the first amp that came to mind when I read the title. Even the special NOS version can probably be had at that budget.

The other amp that comes to mind, but that takes a completely different approach is a Vox AC15. Wonderful amps.

Consequently, when it comes time for me to get an electric amp my choices will begin with these two. Totally different beasts, but classics.

Hmmm, lots of Fender guys here. I recently purchased a Blackstar HT-40 and it's one of the best all around amps I've ever owned. I've had Fenders (Super Champ, Twin, Blues Jr, Super Chorus), Bugera, and Mesa and the HT-40 is hands down the best all around, most balanced amp I've had. Check em out!!

Jet city, Jet city, Jet city.
They really are that good, even though they are very inexpensive.

+1 on the Blues Junior, can be found for way under budget, pop a new speaker in it and he's good to go. It can be hard to get used to amp over 15 watts if you're used to playing acoustic only, my thoughts only of course, but I never want the loud, just the sound.
