Default Taylor 712 what do you reckon?

Hi
I'm new to this forum, new to the site and relatively new to guitar playing (one year). But I have been a long time lover of guitar music.

My playing is coming along slow but steady, I am not bothered because I am not in a hurry.

My appreciation of fine instruments is well developed, way beyond my ability to make them sound good. Somehow I just love good quality instruments.

I tryed a Taylor in a music shop in Vancouver on my way from Australia to the UK. That Taylor left a lasting impression.

I am now considering a seconhand Taylor 712. I think I am destined to be a finger picker (mostly) .What do others think of this model.

I am currently playing a custom made Gerard Gilet (Sydney maker) Spruce top Blackwood back and sides. I also have a Larivee parlour rosewood back and sides spruce top.
Thanks

The 712 should be a very good choice for you. Just be aware that the x12s have changed over the years - the bracing pattern and body depth were altered in 2004 to give these guitars more bass and volume, and in 2006 the guitars became short-scale. So you might want to look into how old that particular secondhand 712 is. The 2004 revoicing certainly does help for strumming (but you say you don't do much of that, so perhaps this won't matter).

712 is certainly an excellent guitar. But give a try to a X14 before you make a move. Grand Auditoriums are also great for fingerpicking and carry more bass. I fingerpick my 414 90% of the time !

You can't go wrong with either the 712 or the 714.

Default Taylor 712

I agree, the 14 series is a much more versatile guitar than the 12s. The 14s are very comfortable for fingerstyle, have greater depth and volume unamplified, and stand up to better strumming and flatpicking when needed. Probably why the 14 series is Taylor's biggest seller!

I agree. The 712 is an awesome guitar. You will love it even as an older model. I love the classy looks of the 700 series. Great guitar!

Tim,

If fingerstyle is going to be your thing, and it sounds like it is, go for the 712. I play a lot of fingerstyle and I started on a 414 but found the switch to a x12 body style made a big difference. Very comfortable and a breeze to play. Good luck.
