I would suggest you consider trying John Pearse vintage thumb pick. They have a fairly short blade and they can be shaped easily. I like Fred Kelly's as well but the JP's sound more natural to my ear. Their cheap too.

Dumb question: do you wear the thumb pick just behind the nail or between the joints?

My understanding by looking at pictures is it is worn past the last knuckle and somewhere over the nail. I would guess it's exact placement is dependent on what feels most comfortable in terms of striking the strings.
Do a Google Image search and I bet you can find some pictures.
