Default Fingerstyle song favorites - suggestions

Greetings from the Pacific Northwest!

I've been back playing/practicing regular for about six months. I took a looong break where I wouldn't pickup for months. Forgot most of the songs I had learned.
I retained a handful but they did suffer.....

I just got inspired all of a sudden ( helped one of my pickin fingers didn't lockup on me as much)found this forum, put a pickup in my guitar, bought a fishman amp and started looking at you tube/internet info.

I've learned a couple songs - jiffy jam, miss. blues, whiter shade of pale as well as kinda relearning others.

Goes without saying I have to really like a tune (be inspired) if I'm going to spend time learning/playing it .

I like a challenge as well.

All that said, I am looking for my next tune. I have lots of reference material I could just go in there and pick one but thought I'd ask all ya'll for some ideas/suggestions/vids.

I'm kinda interested in learning some jazz fingerstyle or some Latinish tune but open to other cool stuff.

Thanks

this forum has helped me a LOT so far.

Default Fingerstyle song favorites - suggestions

+1on Licknrff. I just discovered it. Very accessible lessons to help get going quickly on learning some fingerstyle favorites. I learned his version of Stand by Me pretty quickly. Lots of fun.
Also check out Toby Walkers online lesson songs and packs if you want to get into some tasty acoustic blues picking. He's the best, and he is on the forum regularly checking in with students.

I don't know what sort of challenge you are after, but here are a few things that pop into my mind without thinking too deeply about it:

- Classical Gas - a favorite of mine (will take some work to learn to play well).

- Evocacion - by Merlin (an Argentinian composer)

- For a latin sort of thing, anything by Jobim - e.g. Meditation, How Insensitive, Girl from Ipanema, etc. (I had How Insensitive down well once, but I have not learned the others yet)

Evocacion is not too hard. The others will take a bit more work!

Other favorites of mine include Doug Young's arrangements of Shenandoah (not terribly hard to learn) and Bring a Torch.

Kelly Valleu does some good lessons on his site, www.kellyvalleu.com

I signed up for a year once, so I could learn as many pop fingerstyle songs as I could. Expired in June but I might re-subscribe in the new year.

Also, I enjoy listening to the CandyRat youtube channel and I always find songs that I love and want to learn to play. Almost all the tabs are available to purchase at the CandyRat.com site too.

+1 on Toby's lessons. I'll be finishing up his arrangement of Deep River Blues this week. Really neat stuff.

+1 to lick and riff, that guy is by far the best free resource.

Also +1 for Classical GAS, I am learning the Tommy E one on L&R and though it is super challenging it is very satisfying. I am also learning Windy and Warm which is popular on here, you may want to have a look at that too.

Thumbs up

LicknRiff is a wonderful resource, definitely faster than working out a tab. Gareth Evans does some tasty arrangements. I appreciate the free lessons these guys cook up and give a small fee on Patreon.com to both to keep the videos coming.

Try some bossa nova. Sexy music that comes from Brazil and is a mix of Brazil music and Jazz, nice mix.

i like. i am lookin for a good tab/arrangement. I've found two so far.

we'll see how it goes.

at least I am back at it i.e. motivated!. didn't help i got my finger caught in the hinge of a folding wood ladder.

thanks again for all the suggestions.

they are all on the list now. dgonz got any recommendations for brazilian jazz?

"Here Comes the Sun" is a good one. It can sound very close to the original without being too challenging and is instantly recognizable to just about anyone...plus it's a great song. Lot of free tabs online, all are pretty similar with chord shapes of mostly open D, G and A7...best capo'ed at 7. Try to find one with all of the distinct sections (intro, verse, chorus, different turnarounds, bridge, and ending) to keep it interesting.
