I get it that others feel differently, but I do not think of my guitars as people, or as having human personalities or other qualities that would lead me to think of them by name. It's a practice I do not understand. I can see why a black Strat might be "Blackie," which is a name but not really a person's name. Most of the great players I know do not give their guitars human names, with the notable exception of BB King and "Lucille." My '36 Gibson's name os "my old Gibson," and I refer to my SG as "my SG." Maybe it's my own personal limitation, but I think of my guitars as things.

My guitars most definitely have names. In fact it is my wife who has the responsibility of naming them. I play them and she names them....what a deal

In early 1969 I bought Guild AE-176. Named it Clancy's Big Gun, after a friend's Irish Setter.

There's a picture of it in Hans' book.

No names before or since.

I started naming my guitars in High School (around 1973 or so) and continued up until around 2 years ago. I then started buying and selling several and lost track of the names

At the risk of sounding sexist, I always chose female names. It just seemed right since I wrap my arms around them as I played them... Ok, that sounded better in my head.

Any way, yes I used to but not so much any more.

Sounds kind of sad.

My guitars have names. I spend a lot of time expressing myself on them. They're just wood, but they're personal.

My track cars have names. I spent a lot of scary time in them, trying to feel how the tires are doing. They're metal, but they're personal.

Nothing wrong with feeling close to a well built Santa Cruz or Porsche. You're ultimately relating to the passionate builders of those inanimate objects.

I have a Gibson J15 I bought a few weeks after my mum died, aged 99. I decided that one would get her name, Nell, and had a special truss rod cover made. It's the only guitar I have that does have a name other than the model name, of course.

Frankly I would feel embarrassed telling someone an inanimate object was called 'Betty', or whatever. I can see them now, backing slowly away...
