Cool Yamaha Fg Series questions

Hello,
I am thinking about getting another guitar and I am really liking the yamaha Fgx700s. I played the fgx700s in a guitar center. The only question I really have before diving in and buying it is the Fgx730s worth the extra $200 ($299 to $499) The guitar center In my city didn't have the fgx730s. I would love to hear peoples opinions on the sound and the look.

Thanks for reading this. Sorry if it is badly written. i am typing this on my ipad

Cool Yamaha FG series

First thing you should know is the "street price" new for the FG700S is only $199, and for the FG730S it's only $299. And any Guitar Center will match that price. The FG730S is worth the $100 difference. Solid Sitka/rosewood, with abalone rosette looks much better. I'd wait for the 730s, and Guitar Center can do a stock transfer from any other GC that has them in stock. You can have electronics installed for less than the $200 price difference. Problem solved!

That said, you might have been looking at a Yamaha FGX700SC (cutaway model), which IMO is overpriced.

Default FG Series

Agree. The FG730S is an amazing value, and while the FG700S is a good guitar for the money, the 730S just has it all going on. My FG700S is a sandburst model, and my FG730S is a natural gloss finish. The FG730S, to me, looks like a more expensive guitar with the nice rosette inlay, and the rosewood back and sides. The Fg700S is NATO back and sides. The next step up would be the LL6, but that's a bunch more money.

In fairness, I've spent a good deal more time in tweaking out the setup on my FG730S, and mine was seriously in need of a setup when I got it. Now that the truss rod is right, and the right strings are on it, I went from the plastic saddle to tusq, and later made a compensated bone saddle by hand. Now it's a good looking, great sounding player with about 2.5 MM action on the 12th fret.

I also haven't seen or played the "X" models of these guitars, and I'm not aware of them.

Sorry about not clearing that up. The extra x (FGX) means it is acoustic electric. And I was just wondering if the difference in sound and look is worth the extra 200 dollars.

Well, I played a used one at GC yesterday, $150, and it sounded and played great. I'm a Yamaha fan, but only have their old ('70's and older, I think) guitars. This one had a couple dings here and there, but it seemed well made, and played better than several more expensive new guitars. (Not every guitar at Guitar Center is in great shape, I know.) I was tempted, but just don't need another guitar around. I'd hold out for the 730, it was really nice for the money, and well worth the 299 for new if you'd rather that. I don't recall if it had a pickup, but I would be tempted to put my own in anyway, particularly at that price point. (how good can those pickups be?)

I'm a big fan of the Yamaha FG700s. An especially good value IMO. Here's my video review.
