Default if emerald x20 sounds Gibsony, does x7 sound like a smaller gibson?

have seen several comments that the emerald x20 leans itself to a Gibson sound, I'm assuming somewhat j45ish?. If that is the case, does the x7 also lean itself to more of a Gibson sound, say a l00 or lg2, or does smaller size take it into a different direction completely soundwise into say taylor, etc?

JDG, my exposure to commentary about Emerald guitars is mostly limited to the AGF (and now defunct MacNichol CF forum). I don't recall ever having read that comparison before. Even if it has been said, personally I can't see it being true enough to make it a point in ordering one. I'd say that Emeralds, like most if not all other CF builders, have their own distinctive tone and should be approached that way when buying. Jmo.

I have a 67 Gibson J-45, and the Emerald Doubleneck, will play them together. Need to get out my old High School guitar anyway. Haven't played it in a long while.

I play the Emerald X20 Artisan and a Gibson J-185. With some eq the Emerald can sound Gibsonesque or have tone more like a Charis or Olson with that deeper warmer tone. I am very impressed by my Emerald, not only the playability, but also the varying tones I get from it with varying eq. Of course, i am playing through a Shertler Unico amp which provides great tone if eq'd that way. I am a firm believer that eq settings can sure make or break the tone of any guitar.

As you can see from my signature, I'm kind of a Gibson guy. My X20 Artisan you can lay into like a Gibson and it just gets louder. Martins and Taylor's, in my opinion, don't hold up to that as well. My X20's tone isn't thin, or middy, or lacking depth like a lot of other guitars, that I'd say, but it doesn't sound like my Gibson's which all do sound more similar to each other than the Artisan. However, I did just order a new custom X20 Artisan, so it's not lacking in tone. Maybe I'd say the Artisan's tone is big like large bodied Gibson's but without having to have a large body?

Not until I received my Emerald X20 Artisan recently and got some time with it did I realize that it sounds as good as or better than my wooden guitars. Again, it might take some time with the eq process, but thats fun. You don't lose a thing having this guitar compared to a name brand wooden guitar.

I've had one for a couple months.

Love the tone but I wouldn't call it Gibson-y. To me that means fat trebles and X20 is pretty crisp.

I'm struggling with the neck though. Pretty beefy, 1 3/4 - 2 1/4 is limit for my small hands and this neck is *big*.

So likely putting mine up soon!

hotroad, throwing out Charis and Olson, let-alone Gibson as comparisons, is pretty heavy...certainly favorable to Emerald. I haven't played any of the renowned wood guitars you reference, so I certainly accept your view. That said, you are only speaking about the plugged-in tone shaping of the X20 where the pickup system can have a lot to do with it. So where are you giving credit to the X20s tones...the guitar itself, the pickup (which do you have), or both and if so, to what extent? More importantly, as many of us don't plug-in much, if at all, I'm hoping you can express an opinion about the X20s unplugged acoustic tone. How would you compare that?

I agree it's the acoustic tone that should be compared. Electrically you can shape many guitars to sound like your favorite wood one.

FWIW, I use a Lemon Aid pedal into a RNP and into my PA or amp for my Artisan. I defy anybody to get a better amplified guitar tone than that. It was a holy crap moment when I stumbled on to that combo.
