Finish cracks
I decided to ask this question here since I assume there are a lot of luthiers that could give advice on how to repair finish cracks on my custom 2003 Mauel "McCloud". I recently discovered that Hank Mauel retired so I can not ask him.
Anyway, the finish has cracked and I am not sure if it can be repaired with an overcoat, if it needs to be refinished, or should just be left alone. If it needs to be refinished I would like to see if anyone has a suggestion as to whom could do it for me. I am in N. Illinois [IMG][/IMG] This last picture is just for ref. the finish is not cracked anywhere else but the top.

Retired does not mean dead, nor does in mean the warranty, assuming there was something like that, is void.
I'd leave it alone. Refinishing is almost never a good idea. |

Beautiful guitar! I am in the camp of "let it be" also. It was a brand new guitar for just a very short while. Now it is a wise and learned veteran. Just take good care of it, and it will provide you years of faithful service.

Put some scuff marks at the lower right of the rosette to give it some balance.

Finish advice
Thanks for the comments guys! I will leave it alone then.
One day I may sell it and I am concerned that it may not be "sellable" the way it is. I play mostly nylon these days and may decide to buy or trade for a new Thames or equivalent quality classical. I am probably going to need more dollars to make that happen.

Send Hank an email and ask him if its lacquer. If it is, then you may be able to find an experienced tech or luthier that has experience using butyl cellosolve. I have had good success using it to repair finish cracks. Its basically a slow drying solvent which can be used to melt the finish. Its not for the inexperienced user to play around with though.

Hank
I am pretty sure it is lacquer and I believe he had another shop do his finishing for him--another well known Luthier near by as I recall.
I would like to contact him but I need an email or phone number. Can anyone pass along the info or tell me where to find it? Thanks

I am not going to put Hank's info into a public forum, but a google search on his name brought it up easily enough!

finish crack worries
I'm having a similar issue, albeit on a smaller scale. If 3 well known luthiers advise the OP to let it be........I'm going to do just that. Thanks for the advice!

Since Tim McKnight's suggestion doesn't involve refinishing it wouldn't hurt to at least follow it up.

Hank Mauel
Talked to Hank Mauel today and he advised me to leave it alone. He says it is only cosmetic and will not adversely affect the sound. If I sell it he would be willing to talk with a potential buyer. Very nice guy.
If I decided to do anything, he said the Butyl Cellosolve could be considered. Going to leave it be. Thanks to all for the advice. Bob
