The point of the two similar scuffed pics is to notice that on 4 coats the pores are almost (but not quite) history. I think this guitar will do well with 6 coats on the top, and 7 on the rest.

More easily seen side by side. The shot on the top is with four coats of oil varnish and the bottom shot has three coats...

Bruce, as an amateur instrument maker, I can't help wondering why, after pore filler, sealer and 4 coats of varnish, the pores still show up. I would have thought that, after the pore filler and sealer, one shouldn't see them any more.

I've also never really understood what the sealer is supposed to do.

Finishing has always been my 'bęte noire' and on the last few instruments I've been pore filling with Z-Poxy and French polishing. I get a reasonably good finish, but I've noticed that after a few months the FP sinks a little and one can see where the pores were again.

I don't mind this look and I prefer it to some of the professional 'dipped in plastic' high-gloss finishes but I wonder if this happens with varnish?

Hope you don't mind me asking.

My experience of pore filler is that it does not bring the surface of the wood to truly level, but rather limits the depth of the pores. I doubt there is as much as 5 thou of sink in my pores but that looks like a lot when you consider how thin my finished film is something around .0035" typically. I use traditional solvent based filler, and seal with shellac before I apply it in order to keep color even. I cringe at the thought of using epoxy, and FP seems inadequate to me as a real world finish, so I have no experience with either of those products.

I do what I can to avoid putting inert or acoustically "dead" materials into my "live" guitars as it seem counterproductive to me. Also, if that's not enough for you, I have a reaction to epoxy which is that I feel nauseous for hours after getting any at all on me, and my work habits are such that if I am using it, I will get it on me. For a number of years a sideline of mine was designing and building high performance slalom race windsurf boards, and that did me in for epoxy.

The oil varnish has been curing quietly in Bruce’s shop now for 23-days since the final coat was applied. It should be adequately cured and ready to continue the build in another week.

Thanks Dave...all credit goes to Bruce for the two ring rosette as an homage to Kalamazoo (J-185 body shape) and the use of flamed koa and maple to match the Oz’ Blackwood and the maple purflings...
