That's a very interesting sound hole idea Mark. From the little I can see, it looks beautiful and natural and it makes a lot of sense. Reminds me somewhat of an ear canal or perhaps a horn. Can't wait to see more of this.

Thanks for commenting nootis. The top will need be on before I can properly show the exit of the sound port. It will be done with Black Ebony and will come out at the junction of the side and top. Lot’s more to come!

Default Moving Along

Today the back went on and here is a little more detail of what I am doing with the sound port. First the back going on;

Here is a shot of the structure my throated port;

You can see the Spanish Cedar sound port mouth/heel block. As it vents off to the left the throat turns to Black Ebony. You can see the back lighting coming in through the port.
I have the top all braced. I need to voice it which will be a bit of a trick because it was better to install the transverse brace early. My plan is to put a piece of masking tape where the brace goes and then glue a dummy onto that so it can be easily removed when done. Unless I come up with a better idea over the weekend

That looks really cool, Mark!

Looking forward to seeing how it all comes together in the finished guitar!

Very innovative...

Thanks Nemoman, After all the three view drawings it’s great this is working out into a workable model. I expect to have the box closed and bound next week and will show how this all ties into the overall design.
Then it will be onto the myriad of other ideas I’m working into this guitar.

Mark

Thanks ukejon. It's an idea I've been working on for awhile but, it really didn't start coming together until I ran into this guy on the way to the shop early one morning:

Smile Loving this...

I am a huge fan of sound ports. They make singing and playing unplugged in noisy places WAY EASIER.

Your throated port certainly has my interest piqued!

Fred, I bet the snail picked up Mark's good vibes with those antennae...

Cool stuff, Mr. Hatcher.

May your herds increase!

Cheers

Paul

I'm not sure how he heard of me but, he was just waiting there by my shop door. He was big and caught my attention and I thought I'd bring him into the shop for a picture or two.
Now I have never had any great fascination for snails, I've kind of thought of them as "slugs on the half shell". I put him on the table and got the camera and set up a couple lights. When I was ready I noticed how he was kind of looking around like a little puppy (maybe not quite as hyper). I took a couple shots,

And I thought, "Wow we're kind of bonding here".
Anyway, the next morning I had this whole vision of a side port that can be tuned, directed, and more efficient than typical sound ports. I could use the cutaway and the heel block to provide the material to create a rather snail like funnel thereby not having to add a lot more materials into the body of the guitar.

So I'll take my inspiration from where I get it and I usually don't go wrong partnering with nature

Thanks Paul. There are a number of advantages to sound ports. I had someone tell me recently that ports relieved the back and neck pain that he would get from having to lean over a guitar to hear better.

Thanks for commenting!

Default Sound Port

Moving along on this throated port. There's a lot of clean up to do but, these pictures should give an idea of how the sound port is going to look;

Thanks for viewing!

Very beautiful, Mark. I don't really think the "unlimited" moniker is sufficient, however. If I can stumble across an appropriate superlative, I will let you know.

I always take an interest in watching your build threads on the Forum, Mr. Hatcher, and your work never fails to impress. But this time you've outdone even yourself!

On an unrelated note, do you have any time for your family? Friends? Breathing?
