Default Bending and laminating the sides

Thank you to all who have commented so far. As I have enjoyed many builds here myself, I'm happy to be able to share this experience. It is nice to now be able to contribute something to the forum.

Well, the real work has finally started on my build, first up is the sides. Those familiar with Joel's build process will know he uses laminated double sides. In this case, we purchased two sets of Manchinga sides, one was a backup if there was an issue in bending the first set. Since the first set bent fine, the second set became our inner liner for the build. Here is a pic of the two pairs of sides before bending.

Joel noted that the sides where a little harder to bend then most woods and was happy for the laminated sides which will help hold the pieces in the correct shape and position thereby helping to reduce any tension when glueing the body pieces together. Here the sides are bent and the individual pieces are laminated into the two halves for the body. First is the inside view of each half -

The second is the outside view of the halves -

I have heard of Joel's building humour, so when I saw this preliminary image of the sides joined -

- I was a little skeptical when he said the sides were now tacked together ready for the neck and tail blocks to be glued on ... Haha

As a lot of people have noted in their build threads with Joel, he's a fun guy to work with. This has been my experience as well, he has a good sense of humour and a positive attitude. He has involved me at every stage of the process and has been very inclusive (which also seems to be fairly common with the luthier community, judging by the builds on this site).

Here is my Baranik 00M Machinga over Sitka.

I love the tonal properties of machinga. Plus, and to me it is a big plus, machinga is a completely renewable tonewood.

Joel is a great builder and a great guy. I will look forward to this build.

Steve

Thanks, I'd like to take the credit for this, but I was only in the right place at the right time

Hey Steve,

I'm glad you found this thread as your guitar was the one that inspired me to choose this Manchinga B/S set. Mike did an exceptional job on your guitar and seems like another great luthier to work with. Though the patterns are different between our sets, they still have similar colours, especially in the sides. There is quite a lot of variation in this Manchinga material, something for everyone. I do not really know much on the renewable story, I'll have to look into this some more.

Default Joining the sides

Got Joel straightened out on the side orientation and he has the blocks glued in with no trimming of the edges yet.

I'm including the proverbial "sides in the mould" picture only for the reason that it shows off the hand tools well on Joel's shop wall. I'm sure there are many forum members (myself included) that enjoy snooping on the various luthier's tool caches (maybe even a luthier or two as well). If you're wondering what the sign on the back wall says it's -

Drive is key to HAPPINESS
Set Goals and
ALWAYS Strive to ACHIEVE !

And a second one without the mould blocking the view

The joined and trimmed sides

The joined halves at the tail, very nice if I say so myself

And my favourite, showing off the spalted inking lines coming around the lower bout

Sigh ... what a great start to the build, looks like I'm in good hands

WOAH Ian that is spectacular! Amazing how material lile that can achieve such a close book match looking at your "butt".

On a side note, love that sign by Joel as well; a great reminder to us all

Default Progress update

Finally hit 50 posts, only took me 4 years and 268 days

Joel has continued work on the rim with kerfing being added. Nice clean work -

Here is the end view showing the wedge feature. The spalting match looks great between the halves -

Last pic is a teaser of the back centre seam -

Looks like no need for a centre strip on this bad boy!

That is a stunning set of manchinga, IBKuz! Congratulations on trying something a little different. I'm sure that Joel will turn out a great guitar.

I played a Baranik 00m in manchinga at TAMCO a couple of years ago. If memory serves me well, with the manchinga, the midrange warmed up nicely without getting cluttered when I really lay into some heavy strumming. That Baranik 00m was a lovely instrument, whose sound was a hair more focused on the fundamental than on the 00m that came home with me. Different tops, mind you. The manchinga had a sitka top (like El Conquistador's), whereas mine has Carpathian over higuerilla. (You can see the pics still on TAMCO's website.)

Looking forward to more pics.
