Default My 90 minutes at Wildwood today

Nice day, the store had the front door open, only me and occasionally one other sitting on the stools trying out guitars. No one trying electrics.

I asked for the HD-7 Roger McGuinn I had seen at the website, saying I wanted to see what a double-G sounded and felt like. Sales guy went and got it from the storage bay next door.

It sounded as if plugged in. Wow. And a beautiful action. Sounded a little weird when picking just the G because the octaved string gets hit first. Or that's how I remember it.

We had a discussion about how I have gone crazy thinking I simply must have a Martin with the vertical inlaid CMF a-r-t-i-n design, which the HD-7 I played has.

So, I was shown a 42, maybe it was a D-42. Georgeous inlay where the purfling is added around the fretboard overlay. But no boom like the McGuinn HD-7.

Then another 40-something, a single 0, a real beauty. Still, no boom like the McGuinn. And another, some special edition thing, maple neck and headstock, bookmatched walnut back and sides. Stratospheric prices.

Needing to get back down to reality, I tried a Gibson J something dread, didn't like it, then a new distressed finish Martin all magogany Streetmaster (was that the name?) dread.

Nothing came close to that HD-7. It's $3,899 plus almost 8 percent sales tax. I'm considering.

Ibanez do something similar with the AEL 108MD-NT
8 strings - double octaves on the G and D strings.

Given the location of the OP, I’m guessing he’s talking about Wildwood Guitars, which is 30-40 minutes outside Denver and from everything I’ve ever heard, just as well-regarded. A quick search for the model he mentioned on their website would seem to back that up.

Both are shops that I’d like to visit someday.

For neither the first nor the last time, I stand corrected. I missed "louisville" from his other thread. I'll amend.

Do it. You can thank me in June when I visit family in Broomfield.

I visited them when I was in Denver on business a couple of years ago. Enjoyed every second. Almost walked out with an ES-335, but just couldn't pull the trigger, now I kind of wish I had.

They were some of the nicest folks I've ever met in a store, even gave me a free T-shirt just for coming out

Short, the guitar spoke to you, based on your description. Don't let it get away!

I always wanted to visit that store. The website makes me drool. But I also had the urge for one of those martin logos and being cheap, I bought a D-41. Beautiful guitar but was basically a d-28 with bling. I knew I made a mistake and took a beating and traded up to a D-42. Wow what a difference. But nowadays the new 2017 d-28 is pretty close without the bling.

I too felt the call of that vertical logo. I ended up with an all Koa D-42 and love it. If you have the urge and find one you like, don't let it get away!!

I did not buy it but still may.

One of the things I played on it was The Band's "The Weight," having just seen James James video on YouTube. Here he is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oCC5P7I_4OU

The intro played up around fret 9 sounded a little bit weird with the twin G, but otherwise, what a sound!
