Thanks Jon!
This guitar has a lot in common with your's 13 frets and a cutaway. Of course, the headstock and bridge are quite different. I'm starting up my first nylon hybrid Greta next week. Bet you didn't know she was so complex Mark

Cedar/Koa Spec Penelope Crossover
I haven't posted much on this spec Penelope nylon crossover I've been working on so here it is and updated.
I voiced the guitar today and really enjoyed the color contrast between the Sitka and Swiss Moon Spruce bracing with the rather dark cedar: Having done that I've closed up the box so all that bracing will probably not be seen again!:

Hybrid Nylon Greta
My Penelope nylon crossover has become a very popular model for me and I thought I should come out with some additional nylon models. The Greta model is a bit bigger than Penelope and lends itself very well to the type of bracing pattern that I have developed an understanding of with Penelope.
At the beginning of this month I started my first Greta nylon hybrid: This guitar is high flamed Koa with a Western Red Cedar top. The cedar seems to do a great job picking up the gold in the Koa: This will be 14 fret to the body 25.5" scale Trimmed in Cocobolo Penelope crossover type open headstock Here are some in progress pictures: As crossovers go my aim with this guitar is to be a little more toward a steel string with it's 14 frets to the body and a few other details I'm working out. Thanks for viewing! Mark

I'm really looking forward to hearing this one all strung up. It's the first cross over I've done with my special stash of Black Walnut. Mark

Being able to select the wood for the buttons, I think, is a good way to help tie the look of the headstock together. Mark

Totally agree.
What I think you did so well was the inclusion of sapwood on all six buttons. Just a nice example of thinking through the details. Steve |

I guess that just seemed appropriate because this guitar's visual theme was kind of an ode to sapwood. Cocobolo is just such a beautiful wood and the contrasting color of the sapwood just wouldn't have come out that way if a human had designed it Mark

Off to the finisher
I've got this spec Penelope nylon crossover all cleaned up and sent to the finisher yesterday. I really like this Western Red Cedar/Koa combination both in looks and tone. It has a solid mahogany neck and lyre shaped open headstock:
I should have it back in 5 weeks or so. In the meantime there are plenty of other things going on in Hatcher's workshop. Mark

Walnut Crossover back from finisher
Just got this Black Walnut Cedar topped Penelope nylon crossover back from the finisher. To anyone who is not too keen on Black Walnut because you don't like it's looks or it doesn't cost enough, or it's domestic and especially if you don't think you like it's tone, I'd suggest you give it another listen, look, judgment. Mark

Hatcher's Workshop '14
Mark- this photo alone could sway most people into considering Walnut! Just breathtaking!
I REALLY want to hear it though, because if it sounds 1/2 as good as it looks- I would certainly consider having a guitar built with it. Thanks! |
