Default Mustang coupe

I can't help but wonder why Ford didn't include a coupe with the current Mustang design .

Hi Otterhound! What am I missing? Did someone at Ford just pop a screw loose and make a sedan version? Did Autoweek and R&T let me down?

They did...it’s called a Fusion. I’m a Mustang fan, especially ‘64-1/2 - ‘68, and I appreciated the attempt at recapturing the vintage vibe from ‘05 - ‘14, but since then, but Ford got lazy and built a Fusion GT and labelled it a Mustang.

No sedan since there never has been a Mustang sedan .
A non fastback coupe Mustang along the lines of the original . 2 doors with a vertical rear glass and a trunk lid .

Never was Ford fan BUT it's hard to "not like" those 67+ Mustang fastbacks. When I was 11 or 12, my older married cousin drove a white 70 with a black interior and her husband drove a 67 in that lime gold green color with matching green interior, both fastbacks. The green one was a stick. Good youthful memory.

They didn't make one because the different body style would have to be fully crash tested and safety certified and they decided demand wouldn't justify the expense.

Love the Mustangs! Especially the originals... my mom had a 64 1/2 and it was fire-engine red! Coolest thing on the block.

.....and they're ruining the current ones just like they did the originals. Each year they got bigger and fatter and more bloated with unnecessary trim. The sleek '67 was the best and went downhill from there.

I think the term y'all are looking for is "notchback". The rednecks down south call them "trunk style".

I used to bleed Ford Blue. I used to be a die hard mustang guy, but they totally lost me with the 2005-2014 model, which I thought looked like an Adult Swim cartoon character:

I absolutely hate the modern trend of cars getting so big and heavy. I understand fat lazy americans want power/electric everything, and there are crash safety concerns, but a performance oriented V8 powered car oughtta weigh in ~3000-3100lb, NOT 3800+. Makes a huge difference.

My favorite style Mustang would be the 64.5-66 fastback:

However, the 2015-2017 models are a close second, I thought Ford did a fabulous job. The 2018 model was a terrible revision, so says me...

Last, while I'm on my soapbox... I think GM's approach to the new millennium V8 engine (the Gen III/IV smallblock "LS" V8) is far superior to the crazy complicated and HUGE OHC Ford "modular" approach.

GM 6.2L V8 (440hp) on left, Ford 5.0L V8 (435hp) on right:

The GM is (way) smaller, lighter and has 1/2 as many moving parts.

I know practically all you need to know about pre '73 Fords. That's when I became a factory-trained Ford auto mechanic!

then I went about learning how to be a field geologist.

then I went to graduate school for engineering.

then I bought a mandolin.

then I began learning fingerstyle blues.

Something about my wife and children too!

Never kept up with autos, but really think those old cars were cool and I'd love an early Bronco or Mustang. Not a fan of horses in real life though. . .

To make the mustang purist head spin, ford is now planning a hybrid mustang.

When we did the modern day Henry Ford museum complex and factory tour there were some insights on modern day product research and of course a whole lot of history showing products that failed and won. From that I'm guessing Ford did what they thought was a best possible outcome for their engineering and manufacturing efforts.

BTW, I suggest a trip to the Henry Ford complex and the factory tour (F150) as last on the agenda. Take your passports for a beer and meal at Motor Burger across the river. You don't have to eat meat. Coming from the west? Take one of the ferries across Lake Michigan. As much as it's motor city I suggest staying near the museum and taking the shuttles the lodging places have.
