I'm reading the book on Janesville, WI and GM plant closing. I completely forgot I had it on Kindle loan request months ago and it was automatically checked out so I started reading it.

The best explanation for the interest is my own livelihood as a kid and young adult was dependent on all that industry but I moved on in the 1980s times mentioned.

No conclusions yet - I'm only 30% in.

I'll get back to Gregg Easterbrook's book showing the world is not as bad as many make out out to be as soon as I finish the Janesville book.

My book problem is I try to read my NY Times and WS Journal every day, exercise, touch the guitar 3-6x a week, oh, and then there's work that pays and family.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I can't decide whether (as according to my wife) I forgot to grow up or am going senile early from having to deal with a real world that seems nuttier than the completely unbelievable one that J K Rowling imagined.

That being said, it's been a "ripping good yarn" though and actually a WHOLE lot better than the Hunger Games series.

I'm also really gaining an appreciation for Alan Rickman's performances in the films and am trying my best to imagine how Richard Harris would have protrayed Dumbledore in the later films. OTOH I am also struggling with the divergences between the books and films and have a VERY hard time tolerating the younger actors' wooden performances.

Yes, I'm more of a move buff than an avid reader but if I find a series of movie engaging yet lacking in "meat" I will look to the novelizations to try and "unsee" what the director interpreted the story to be. I'm especially looking forward to the novelization of the last Star Wars movie. I'm still not going to buy it though; my library card is in good standing.

I finished Janesville: An American Story. I believe it could be interesting beyond my connection that was a period of being at or in the GM plant or suppliers daily and my own moving on to something else in life.

With the book as a reminder I'm inking one of my made in Janesville Parker fountain pens, and I noticed the latest roller ball refill for one of my 1970s Parker pens was made in India. The last Parker Jotter I bought was made in India but the nice gel refills still seem to be made in Europe.

Now back to the Easterbrook book unless the one of the Kindle hold shows up as automatically checked out as this book did.

Kindle book wait lists in the library system will at times mean extra weeks or months to finish a book I've bought.



P.S. I'm still doing a really bad job of reading fiction.

Just started Da Vinci by Walter Isaacson. Unique presentation to the life story of the great man. Isaacson lays out a timeline, the main characters, and some background on each protagonist before he dives into the heart of his work. If you're a fan of the life of Da Vinci, give it a look

I've never listened to an audio book but I almost bought one. There was a a short period of time when I had a 45 minute commute to work.

Where do you listen to your books? Car or home?

As kids we were taught in school that Australia was discovered by Capt. James Cook.
How wrong that really was.
The Dutch were here much earlier but were much too busy with the Dutch East Indies Trading for any 'exploration'.
Nothing to see here (or trade!) so they moved on.

Been a while since I've seen this thread. "The Boys In The Boat" is this week's read. I mostly read trashy bestsellers with miserable endings, but this is a real live book.

I wonder what the H... is happening with writers of bestsellers these days.....write 7/8 of a pretty good book and then tack on whatever ending comes to mind because.....what....maybe the deadline is approaching????

My “bathroom book” is “The Fabric Of The Cosmos” by Brian Greene.

Good explanation of contemporary astrophysics in layman’s language.

Also, The Lord Of The Rings for the umpteenth time. (First read in 1965)

The Hobbits have just arrived in Bree and met Strider.
