My new Eastman 'John Pisano' AR880CE (1-3/4" nut) archtop is a wonderful guitar for playing fingertyle. I like it best or playing jazzy standards.

I also play archtops for fingerstyle and with pick, about 50/50. I can't see what difference it makes which type of body style you pick (flattop/archtop) when it comes to which style of picking you choose.

Just FYI, PB plays a Michael Greenfield 'Altiplanos' archtop on the CD of the same name.

I typically play my acoustics but love what Tuck Andress, Marcel Dadi and Chet do with electrics.

Thumbs up fingerstyle on Atops

Late to the game, sorry. Fingerstyle playing on archtops can be wonderful, and I enjoy it very much. A nice transparent pickup like the custom Kent Armstrong humbucker lets the player emphasize technique rather than maximum volume, while still retaining the true tone of a well-built instrument. On a purely acoustic instrument designed for fingerstyle, material choice is important. European spruce tops add responsiveness and sparkle that lends well to fingerstyle playing. Voicing the back to be more sensitive and/or carving a flatter arch to elicit more bass are two effective methods to achieve a more dynamic response for fingerstyle.
