Matt, you're totally correct - the wood may decide, but the over-"informed" nerds may just be who will buy ....

Default Top Choice

Hi Greg:

I love Cedars....but I guess you already half know which way to go with this right? But seeing as I have already chosen LS redwood for a top,.. if it was up to me and a fun project / experiment then I'd try something totally different for the hell u vit!!

Red spruce or POC???????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you racman, you hit the nail on the head

Of course I know how to pick out a top set, and of course I've had them all out tapping/listening, and they're all great........This is a fun/informational gathering question, I'm just curious what everyone out there would choose if they had the opportunity to "build" this one. Seems like Redwood and Cedar are winning at this point, keep the suggestions coming.

Cheers,
Greg

Since it's "non commissioned" I'd think you'd want it to be versitile. I'd use Sitka-the forgotten top wood LOL

Hey Matt, when we were at Ervin's voicing class his favorite/preferred tops were Sitka. I remember us doing flexing/tapping experiments with all species and the Sitka were very nice indeed.

I would choose Lutz... and maybe request a deeper body and manzer wedge, pushing for a smaller (and more comfortable) all-in-one guitar. A guitar responsive to and resonate with delicate play yet capable and accommodating with headroom to spare under a more aggressive attack.

BRAVO, Matt!
Each set of wood should be judged on its own merits. You will find tonal and physical properties variations within each species.
That said: Adi, Carpathian or Sitka spruce for aggressive pickstyle playing;
Sinker or LS Redwood, Red Cedar, or Engelmann spruce for most fingerstyle...

Looks like redwood is a favorite, it really is a great choice. One of the reasons I asked this question was that I initially glued up a red spruce top for this project, then got to looking around the shop pulling out various tops and thought, there are so many great options lets see what the majority of players would choose for their guitar......just so happens I have some sinker redwood tops that are very stiff, light, and have an amazing taptone, I'm leaning that direction now, thanks for your input.
