Default Rainsong Al Petteway model thoughts

Can anyone give me some insight about the tone/playability of the guitar please.

I have been auditioning one at The Guitar Sanctuary in Dallas. I love the sound and playability. I also love the idea of the durability and being able to travel with it and not worry. As for looks, Meh... Not bad but it doesn't look like wood either. My biggest hold up at this point is the price. I don't worry as much about it being damaged or destroyed as much as I worry about it being lost or stolen.

Really nice instrument though.

The Al Petteway model sounds great in the introductory video I saw. I'm trying the Smokey Hybrid the end of this week. I'll know a bit more about Rainsong and how I like their products then. I do hear a lot of positive comments about Rainsong guitars. The tone and playability matched with the durability is a wonderful thing!

Haven't tried this model yet but love my Rainsong OM. Sounds like a good excuse to have a visit to Guitar Sanctuary

If you like wooden things with strings you will never regret a trip to the Guitar Sanctuary. I am curious to hear what you think about the APLE so please keep us posted. I was also quite taken with the Blackheart Sassafras Taylor 714 FLTD.

Enjoy!!!

Oh. They are a five star Gibby dealer and have Collings, Macphersons, and Martins too.

Hi Bigshoe,

I took delivery on an APLE from the good folks at LA Guitar Sales a few months ago. I am quite happy with this guitar. It's easy to play (especially after I had the action adjusted slightly by a local repair person). In spite of lots of discussion on the AGF and elsewhere about the neck being too this or too that, I find it quite comfortable and easy to navigate. I like the 12 fret to the body shorter scale of this guitar. It's comfortable to hold while playing.

Does the guitar sound like my John Greven Brazilian-Lutz OOO? Of course not, but it has a very nice balanced tone with plenty of base for my ears. Trebles are sweet. It's designed for finger style playing, so it's very balanced, but works well with strumming too. I'd describe the overall tone as that of a well-balanced modern sounding acoustic guitar designed for finger style playing.

The upgraded Gotoh 21:1 tuners are fabulous (I have them on my Greven too) and the pickup system works well. It sounds like an acoustic guitar when amplified properly. The best part is I don't have to be concerned with environmental conditions with this guitar, as it's all carbon fiber. I also like the sunburst finish.

It comes with a nice hard shell case, but I picked up a Mono OM size hard gig bag which fits the guitar perfectly.

All in all, I really like this guitar and would be quite happy if it were the only guitar I had. Check with Ted at LA Guitar Sales for a really great price and a 3 day return option if you're not satisfied.

Hope this helps,

Bill

Music is communication; according to one source, in the beginning there was the word. Socrates argues that there was a cosmic music and every once in a while we could tune in. Got to love it!

I had the privilege of hearing Al Pettaway demo his sig model Rainsong in concert at The Swannanoa Gathering year before last.

It sounded wonderful!

Of course, it WAS being played by Al Pettaway.

I really like mine.

Tone is bright and clear. Acoustically sounds different than wood, but pleasing still. Balanced, projects well, too. Can get a nice thumpy bass when I want, and the few times I play harmonics they ring out well.

Plugged in, it's very good, and flexible - having the mic and transducer to blend is nice.

Neck is chunkier than I'd been accustomed to, but since buying this and the 000-18ge with a mod v, I now find that I prefer the thicker neck. Before, I liked my larrivee neck and the mlo neck on my 0-15 - but I'd never spent any real time with a thicker neck.

Nut width is 1-3/4, just right for me. Saddle is a little tight for me, I find I prefer 2-1/4 or 2-5/16, and this is 2-3/16 I think or a shade under. Still ok, but I like a little more room.

Fret board is very flat, and doesn't seem to bother me at all. Feels nice, too.

Tuners are awesome! Favorite that I own.

Size is just perfect for sitting and playing, like the om size, and the 12 fret short scale cutaway combo is wonderful for me.

Oh yeah, almost forgot - another nod to Ted and Helene at LA Guitar Sales. Informative, professional, competitively priced, deliver what they promise. Second guitar that I've purchased from them.

If I were in the market for a carbon fiber guitar, I would definitely get a Rainsong and the Al Petteway model would be the one I would go for. I was able to play Al's own signature guitar at Swannanoa a year or so ago and it is great in every respect. Very playable, nice tone - warm and clear. And, not placing this above tone and playability, but I didn't think that I would like the color at first when I saw pictures, but in person, it looked great.

Best,
Jayne

Looks like there's a lot of love for the Rainsong APLE here, and I'm not surprised. Basically this guitar is based on the Rainsong CO-OM1000N2 which is a 14-Fret OM, and one of Rainsongs most popular models with pro musicians. The APLE has a 12-Fret short scale NS neck, Gotoh 510 tuners, and Tobacco Burst finish along with Fishman Prefix Premium Blend electronics per Al's request. It is an excellent package that is priced the same as a standard CO-OM1000NS, and you get upgraded electronics, Gotoh 510 tuners, and Tobacco Burst finish at no extra charge. What's not to love?
