Default Wood prospecting.

I had an old red maple stump that I was trying to get rid of and rather than rent a stump grinder, I decided to just cut it as close to the ground as I could with a chain saw. The results were interesting. I took the stump slabs to the shop and sliced off a few veneers. It could make a sort of psychological test instrument if placed judiciously over the headstock or rosette.

What do you see?

Pre shop outdoor work.

This stuff is not real strong, the fungi have been working it over, but it hangs together well enough and as a veneer, impregnated with CA should work well and really pop.

Nice find John! I think it's really a special thing when you have the opportunity to use some local wood. It sort of puts a personalized touch to a build.
It will be fun to see what you do with it!

I had a Norway maple cut down last year but it was far to gone for anything really. That stuff looks cool though.

I was walking down the street this morning and ran across an interesting slab of dogwood. Probably knot suited for guitars though.
