Default archtop tuning........

I've never owned or even played an acoustic archtop.

I'm in the final stages of building one, and I'm finding tuning issues.

I'm used to the strings needing a while to get used to tension, but with a new tether for the tailpiece (a plastic one) how long before I should expect the guitar to stay in tune?

thanks!

Martin,
I own a 1927 Gibson L-5 with the first generation wrap-over tailpiece. Between the top sinking down under tension, the strings pulling the tailpiece sideways (at first) and the general string stretching I can get the guitar to hold tune in about 5 minutes.

If you are referring to the 'tether' as the loop that holds the tailpiece to the endpin (such as my friend John Monteleone developed a while back), I'm not sure what kind of material your loop is made from, so that might be a variable in the scheme of things.

Any pictures?

Regards,
Howard

You using the Sacconi violin style attachment? They stretch for quite some time. I don't like them for that reason.

yup, a sacconi......

so hopefully it'll have settled down in a couple of days.

thanks!

I'll get some pics tomorrow (it's in work) but to whet your appetite, its a doublecutaway with fanned frets. here it is getting some finish.....

I THOUGHT about a sunburst, but it worked so well that its all black on top!!

still a lot of the setup work to do, the nut and saddle still need a lot of work and the frets aren't levelled yet, but I just HAD to get strings on there, y'know?
