most expensive acoustic guitar ever made
anyone got any ideas ? Was curious which guitar it would be.

It's probably going to be something connected with an icon like Elvis or something. Lotsa bling maybe.
There are some high-end builders out there now, but the market is a funny thing and having an association with a famous celebrity probably eclipses anything that involves precious materials or workmanship. Likely it is a commissioned work with lots of rhinestones or something.

The Ryan with all the crazy Larry Robinson Inlays at Healdsburg last year was the most expensive new guitar I've ever seen, it cost more than a nice 4 bedroom house in the California Bay Area.

It probably depends on whether you're talking about what it was worth when made or what it's worth now. For the latter, the four surviving Stradivari guitars would be right up there, I suspect.

The Martin D-100 is six figures.
More a statment of artistry (and probably over the top) than an actual player, but the list is over $100,000. There are Martin pre wars worth far more, but I took the question as to a new guitar's list price. 42/45 series are good enough for me and still "players"...............

To my knowledge, the Ryan with the Robinson inlays is the most expensive "asking price" for a new guitar, don't know if it counts until someone buys it... Second would be the Robinson inlaid Santa Cruz, again don't know if it has sold... as far as most expensive "new" guitar ever sold - I'm guessing it would be a Martin "One of a Kind" inlaid by either Larry or myself. The top $ one from me was the "Custom Cowboy" which was to commemorate 170 years of Martin guitars. It sold for just under 200K. Larry's "History of Flight" was well in the 100's as well but I don't know if it sold or not.
I think the most expensive celebrity owned guitar was Mother Maybelle Carter's guitar, I don't remember the amount ($450K???). Merle Travis' Martin Bigsby sold for an even $250K and I know the Carter guitar was more than that. If you are talking "Value" it would have to be the Millionth Martin, they sold 100 "scaled down" copies of it for 6 figures each, the guitar itself would have to be valued at "priceless." I've sold a few custom Leach guitars up in the pretty rare air but nowhere near the Ryan/Robinson collaboration. Martin Custom Cowboy Headstock inlay  Cowboy pickguard, this shows the special "holographic" inlay for the mirror in the background using a thin veneer of MOP shell as "glass" The same technique was used for the "smoke" on the headstock. ( a technique dubbed by Dick Boak of Martin as "Smoke and Mirrors")

While customs like the D-100 are expensive, I would expect the most expensive to be one associated with a legendary player. Bill Monroe's mandolin is probably the most expensive of that genre. Perhaps Django's original Selmer or Woody Guthrie's guitar. One like that would probably bring the highest price at auction.
