Import Duties and Tax when Importing Taylor to Oz
Hey guys and girls,
I just ordered a Taylor guitar from Jim at Guitar Rodeo and was wondering that since it was shipped to Australia and valued over $1000, would it be subject to import duties and tax? If so how much would it be? Input from anyone would be fine. I would love to know your experiences with international guitar shipping and the costs involved. Thanks everyone! |

My friend is a lawyer, and there are ways around that. But not sure how it is in oz.
For example, if you got someone to bring it to you from the states, with the intention of not selling. There would be no tax.

I bought my Taylor from myfavoriteguitars.com, and imported it to Sydney. Basically, if the customs value of the goods is over $1000, there is no legal, honest way around the duty and tax.
You will pay 3 or 4% of the value of your guitar in duty. On top of that, you will pay 10% of the sum of the value of your guitar, cost of shipping and duty. It could work out to be a few hundred dollars. That said, I didn't pay any duty or tax, despite being over the $1000 limit. I have no idea why. Maybe Customs just doesnt check everything, especially if it goes through the UPS clearing house. No idea lol. So there you go, if you pay tax, it might be a few hundred dollars. But for some random reason, they might just overlook it. |

You could ask Jim to value it under $1000.00, you are meant to pay duty plus gst on the total colst including shipping and insurance.
If guitar is $1000.00 and shipping is $300, you pay $130.00 gst and insurance was $50 duty would be on the total $1480.00. If you got it valued at less than cost say $900.00 and it was damaged in transit you would only have insurance for the stated amount. Thats why i buy in oz also you don't have any warranty buying from the states.

I did a little research, and found:
EDIT: ( I think for the 9207 section that is electric guitars) hmm must keep researching 9207 - MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS, THE SOUND OF WHICH IS PRODUCED, OR MUST BE AMPLIFIED, ELECTRICALLY (FOR EXAMPLE, ORGANS, GUITARS, ACCORDIONS): 9207.10.00 - Keyboard instruments, other than accordions - Free 9207.90.00 - Other - 5% EDIT: (this however still applies) NOTE: Unless indicated in Schedule 5, rates for US originating goods are Free. As the Taylor is originating from the US and made there too, i expect there to be no duty applied to the guitar. Also with UPS Expedited that Jim is shipping with, the Customs Clearance Fee is included with the price of the shipping but i'm still not sure about the tax component of it. Let me know more of your experiences... Thanks. Last edited by dogdevil94; 06-28-2010 at 01:51 AM. |
