It's kind of a cliche, but Dust In The Wind is a good beginning fingerpicking song.

Plenty to be getting on with here, thanks. I'm not sure what the difference between fingerstyle and fingerpicking is either though!

I believe fingerpicking is using picking patterns to accompany vocals where as fingerstyle is solo picking. (playing the actual tune on the guitar). Something to that effect.

Oh right...in that case my orginal question should have said fingerpicking instead of fingerstyle I guess then!
I'm amazed how much can be learnt on this forum |

An old post I read here described the difference as Fingerpicking = frets 1-3, while Fingerstyle = all of them. Not perfect, but not far off, really, IME.

fingerpicking is generally speaking, backing yourself or someone else while singing. I always think of the guy who used to play with jim croce...he was awesome at it. a real talent, for sure..fingerstyle, on the other hand is playing melody and chords together. my teacher used to call it solo chording. It's more than just a simple note, chord, note, chord...the arrangements can get extremly difficult and demanding...listen to jerry reed play solo, especially jerry's meltdown. Of course Chet, TE, and many many others
