Dilemma : Installing Clear Pickguard
Had gotten word from my dealer that my clear Taylor pickguard had arrived....
Thinking time.... saw from one of Taylor's guides that installing clear pickguards are very tough, and air bubbles might appear if not applied properly.... I'd already installed a tortoise shell pickguard on my W14... should I remove it and install the clear one??!?

I installed a clear pickguard on my JKSM using the water/wet method described in the second part of Frank Ford's tutorial. Couldn't have been easier!

The pickguard is not bad looking even if you are not careful. I installed one with utter disregard for bubbles. No real bubbles formed. I am sure it is not as good as the water method but the pickguard was still pretty invisible.

i think, reading the taylor lit that came with the pickguards (i ordered a tortoise and clear, installed the clear), that some of the older taylor guitars might need more cleanup after a pickguard is removed than newer ones. sez here: "taylors built before 1995 have a finish that may require additional care when cleaning... etc." my '99 was clean when i got it. i just pressed the pickguard on... no bubbles... |
