Default How does the Epiphone SG compare to the Gibson?

Anybody own one? Been looking at this one, seems like a lot of guitar for $349.00.

My thoughts:
  • You'll need a hardshell case - plan on spending another $100 right off the bat;
  • Order one of these at the same time:
    https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/SGSP17SCNH2
  • If you don't already own one, beg/borrow/steal a nice low-/mid-powered tube amp, set it clean at moderate volume - you don't want to mask the inherent tone in a wash of distortion - A/B them side-by-side, and take your time;
  • If you've done this right so far, you'll realize exactly why the near-identical Gibson version costs twice as much;
  • When you're finished, call your Sweetwater rep and tell him/her you'll be sending back the Epi in the morning...
Glad to help...

Or, do what I did and get a 2015 LP doublecut w/P90s and a hard case from Sam Ash for $580.

Yeah for twice the money, you get the right pickups, and right name on the headstock. No way to know unless you can play them both on the gear you own.

I know several guys using those for cruise-ship and other "bumpy" gigs and they work great.

+1. The Gibson SG Special has always been a favorite for people over the years.

Well, the consensus seems to be that the Gibson is much better. I guess I'll try to find a nice used one somewhere.

However, I'll go on the record saying that I have an Epi ES-339 Pro that's an excellent guitar.

I can attest that the Epi 339 Pro is a great instrument, however I just picked up a Gibson (my first ever) and the playability and tone are second to none.

Hi Jerry, that's not to say you won't find a nice Epiphone SG out there that will suit your needs. We all have a budget to follow, nothing wrong with that.
