Qsc 10
I am slowly putting together a P.A. system that will be easier to carry around than my big yamaha (15") cabinets. I got a QSC 12 last spring from a musician friend I know for $400. It is in excellent shape. Now I have a chance to get a QSC 10 from another friend. Again it is in excellent shape and has hardly been used. He wants $400. with a cover. My question is. Would it be a bad idea to use a 10" and a 12" for the main speakers in a P.A. system. It would mostly be used for an acoustic duo. The only issue I can think of is that the 12" may have a little better bass response. Any help or thoughts would be great. Thanks

I wouldn't want to use 2 different speakers as mains because even as a duo you're going to run into different scenarios in each venue you play.
I'd stick with one size for the mains and maybe purchase the 10" and us it as a monitor if it's cheap enough and you need one. As a reference, last year, I purchased 2 RCF ART310's for less than $850 for the pair (new and delivered to my door) and they sound fantastic. A super bang for the buck. |

Other Than aesthetics ..I can see no reason you can't use the mismatched pair.
Because they are both rated at the same impedance and wattage. They are powered... so the signal goes from your board to the individual speakers amp. Not to a main amp and then to both speakers. You will have different tonal responses from each speaker..this may confuse a listening audiences ear. But if you play loud bar scenes no one will notice anyway. I play in a lot of smaller clubs and usually only use one k12..this is another option..or sell the k12 and buy another k10 you should get 400 easy for it. I mean if you are truly worried about it.. If/when you do buy the K10 I would be interested to know if you do hear a difference between it and the K12. I'm not convinced the K12 has more low end but I often hear that from people who haven't tried them. I tried the K12 and chose a K8. I don't hear that I'm lacking any low end response.
Good luck. |

my experience is that the k12 has more bass but particularly with a little distance. The k10 seemed to have as much bass in my studio which is 22 by 16 partly because it has a wider dispersion.
i don't see any reason you couldn't use them both for a pa (which was my plant till i ended up with two k10's (which i was using more).

When I get the K10 I will test them out as best that I can in my basement studio. I am wondering if the K10 will sound a little better with my acoustic.
I will report back with results. Thanks again for the thoughts and help. RPK |

K10 - wider dispersion; K12 - more 'throw' (because it's not putting the signal out wider).

Hi RPK...
If I have a choice between 10" and 12" cabinets of the same maker (without subwoofers), I always choose 12". Better tone on the bottom end, better carry into a room without pushing as hard (if fed the same level of wattage), a smoother bottom end, and enough bass response for vocals, bass guitar or keyboards. I find 10" too small a sound, and 15" too muddy. |

I already own the K12. I bought it last spring in new condition for $400. A K10 is now available in new condition with carry case for $400. I really shouldn't pass it up. I'll find a way to make use of them. Possibly scrap my amp and use the K10 in place that. I have a pair of speaker stands that I got from Monoprice. Two really strong stands for $45.00/pr'

I have a pair of K10's for our acoustic trio. More than enough bass and volume, in fact we have to roll off a lot of bass at the mixer and keep the gain on the speaker about 9:00 just to give us some latitude. I'm glad I didn't spend the extra money or have the added weight of the K12's just to have more throw. The 10's are almost overkill in the venues we play. Wouldn't mind having a 3rd one for a monitor to Replace my EV ZX1 though.
