I use D'Addario Chromes, 12s on my Archtop and they sound great, feel smooth to play (logically) and suit the guitar and it's inherently jazzy tone perfectly. Can't see them working on anything but an archtop though. Flatwounds are perfect for Jazz and rounds for everything else (I think somebody said earlier) and I concur (though you can get a good approximation of jazz tone from round wounds, the reverse definitely doesn't apply). Except Gypsy Jazz which absolutely requires the correct guitar with the correct strings to sound right (Selmer Style and Argentines).
