Default January recording advice!

Got out at 5am on January morning to de-ice my car. Made the little trek to work at 6:45. By the time I got in my socks and shoes were wet so I changed into backups. To dry the socks, I took them into the machine room at the studio and hung them in front of the power amps that have fan-forced cooling. That's a jury-rigged bent paper clip and butterfly clip rig on top of a mic stand. It's really quite toasty in front of them. Warm, dry socks!

Har-har-har!

Keep 'yer feet clean and dry.

A little known fact is that foot odor is caused by bacteria. Antiperspirant/deodorant contains antibacterial chemicals that prevent foot odor. Spray 'em, and then all you need to do is keep 'em clean and dry.

Yes, merino wool can sound better than cotton. However, be careful if you buy off-the-rack wool socks. Commercial wool is not labeled as to which side of the hill the sheep grazed, and the resulting mix of two miss-matched socks can lead to phase issues.

For my recordings, I use wool for traditional British Isles stuff, but change out to cotton when I play delta blues. It's a good thing I'm not performing much on stage these days, as the audience wouldn't understand the constant sock change pauses.

One still needs caution when using cotton even for Delta Blues, as cotton saturates very quickly which leads to very unpleasant distortion
