Default Horror?

Do you pronounce horror with a long "o" as in ho-rror? Or do you pronounce it as with an "a", such as har-rror?

Here in Texas and back home in SC I hear more ho-rror. Which sounds like a person who gets around...

Just wondering how you guys pronounce it.

Todd

First syllable sounds like "or". Or-or, with an "h" in front.

What he said, but I have heard some American accents that sound as har-rror.

I've noticed the use of an 'a' sound for the 'o' in the US more when the following consonant is a little harder. 'Dog', 'stop', and 'body' sound like 'darg', 'starp', and 'bardy'. Many Americans seem to pronounce 'horror' with the word for a naughty lady at the beginning! 'whore-rrerr'!

The "or"s in "horror" are pronounced like . . . . . the word "or".

I think you might be hearing the Northern Cities Vowel Shift.

I pronounce horror just as you describe it.

Now that you bring it up, does a person in the US whose first name is Herb suffer the same fate as a sprig of parsley and end up as 'Errb?
