I'm not a native speaker and in my language, it's always spelled (and pronounced) with "i", so it feels natural to write it like that in English, but for natives it apparently is not.

Because spelling is not a requirement for graduating high school in America! It should be a requirement for getting into high school but it isn't.

i'd guess because in english it's pronounced with an "e" sound.

elix·ir

noun \i-ˈlik-sər\ .
: a magical liquid that can cure illness or extend life

i cannot know of which the english that you speaketh.

the link what i gave has a soundfile throughout which someone is pronouncing it:
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/elixir

and here is a list of whereby it contains a large number of rhyming words:
http://rhymebrain.com/en/What_rhymes_with_elixir.html

the elixir mixture was a richer tincture, bitter and unfamiliar, made without filter or filler, used to bewilder hither and thither, and to transfigure the neurotransmitter of the stiffer drinker.

ewalling, so you pronounce the "er" in dinner differently than the "ir" in elixir? If so, how?

I think we probably do pronounce it differently in Britain.
Not exactly an everyday conversational word, so hard to think of examples, but NOT like in "dinner", more as though it were spelled "Elixeyer", if that makes any sense.

Yes, that makes sense. But note how to convey that, you used the letter e, which goes back to mc1's point of how phonetically, the misspelling "elixer" is understandable. I'm a visual speller, though, and that misspelling just looks awkward to me

I actually thought the correct spelling of that word was "elixyr" 'til I looked it up. Actually, like yourself, I could just see it looked wrong after I had written it.
I thought "Elixir" was a trademark.
I don't know where I got that apart from the sound, probably never had to write it in my life, until describing what strings I didn't like !

I could see it being spelt like that before common spellings became common. Seeing that spelling in Chaucer wouldn't shock me.

If you Google Elixyr you'll find it is a cigarette brand out of Luxembourg.
