Talking New toy!!

Just got a cool new toy:

Not sure how it sounds yet but it looks cool as balls! Nice analog VU meters, big bright tubes in the window, analog dials with detents, analog switches. Nice! Okay.. I know I didn't buy it to look at. I'd better start recording with this baby!

Behringer T1953 - Tube Ultragain

Cisco, I'm not sure.... but it looks cool, eh? Just posted a new picture.

Nah, it's a vintage tube mic preamp - all analog, huge output transformers, tube circuits, +60db of mic gain. Also functions as a DI box or signal level converter to convert -10dbu consumer signals to +4dbv pro-audio spec to eliminate problematic level mismatches. You can dial in the amount of tube warmth that you want, which is really nice. Without the tube warmth, it's just a super-clean and very powerful mic preamp. You can also use it to interface your electric or acoustic... or any instrument to your mixing board or sound card.

Wow! Looks like a nice piece of gear.... I'd be curious to know what you think of it after recording with it. The Behringer stuff has kinda suprised me.. About three weeks ago I did some A/B testing with mic pres and got some interesting results. I compared a Mackie 1604VLZ, Behringer 802A and some really cool high end Sony pres. I used the same guitar (Big Baby), same mic in the same position. The Sonys were by far the best sounding but I was shocked because the Behringer sounded better to me than the Mackie. The Mackie sounded really "mid-rangy" and just lacked true clarity. While the Behringer didn't blow me away I was quite impressed because the 802A is a piece of gear that I would have never used for recording. The other really cool thing about the 802A is you can buy one of these little boards for around $99. I think I paid $209 a few years back for mine. It's been part of my live set up since then. Just thought you might be interested!
