M1A and M80 Opinion
Hi everyone,
I've been thinking of swapping out my Lyric with something different and these two Baggs pickups seem like something I can live with. One question I have for the people who own is how easy is it to swap the pickup from one guitar to another? Does one have to remove the strings completely or just loosen them? Is there a cord that be used without the end pin jack? I suppose another question is, is the extra money for the M80 worth the upgrade over the M1A? Thanks in advance for the help. |

I’ve had both and like both. They can be moved without the loosening or strings but it’s a pain. I permanently installed mine. If you play percussive style I’d say the M80 is worth the extra it picks up more body.
My M80 cost almost twice as much as my M1A and I don’t think it’s worth that much more to me.

No problem to remove once you get the hang of it, no string loosening really needed. I have had the M1A and currently have the M80. I do notice a difference, whether that difference is worth extra cost I can't say.

Strangely enough, I've just posted on a couple of threads about these pickups.
I have the Lyric and M1 and I love them, but they're in very different guitars. I've never tried the M80 so can't give an opinion on that. It's certainly possible to swap the M1 from one guitar to another and that's one of the reasons I bought it. But as was said, you wouldn't want to be doing it mid-gig. I have to slacken all strings on my Washburn, but then it does have an oval sound hole. |

be careful with M80.
Does not fit into smaller soundholes. Have santa cruz OM but needed to take pickup apart and rig it up to get it to fit.

I have the m80. I think it sounds better then the m1.
I like the active/passive capability but use mostly The passive because it's a pain to get to the switch. One of my band mates had the m1 but sold it.. he never liked it. Both installed in Martin dreds. |

* Love the M80 once tweaked and dialed in via pole height adjustment and eq/mid-cut; especially for finger style and my percussive reggae style...I have the M1A too I put in my ol' Lowden but gave to my son. I prefer the better features, looks and overall deeper tone of the M80.
** No issue taking in and out, tho mine stays in 100% until a battery change as I play full-time. *** Some folks have to adjust their attack lest you strike the M80 and hear the click of the pick, never an issue for me as my placement does not interfere with my attack...placement is crucial in obtaining 5th fret harmonics clearly. *** I've posted this vid before, but it demo's live the clear tone & percussive ability of this pup. It's not for everyone's style but it works for me. I've used a few mags over years of gigging and like this best so far. The Dimarzio Angel is good too, but I think it's more mag sounding then the M80 and lacks the other features too. M80 in Goodall CJ plugged straight into my Loudbox: https://youtu.be/2emRKLW85X0

M1A sounds like a mag. M80 has the aggressiveness of a mag and yet sounds pleasant fingerpicking too... it just sounds more pleasant than the M1A for softer stuff.

Used both in my D28 and prefer the sound of the M80 although the M1a can also be tweaked to sound very good.
The M80 senses top movement at a lower frequency to the M1a and sounds better for it imo. I play full time in a band playing large venues and have consistently good results. However, feedback rejection is a big deal for me and my soundman and I have to be a little more careful with the M80 than with the M1a probably because of the increased low mid response of the M80. It isn't a major problem (especially as we use in ear monitoring) but some venues can get a little boomy without careful eq. |
