If you want a particular guitar for example a Gibson J45 play as many as you can and if a store has more than one in stock play all that they stock.

I don't remember exactly "what" was said, but Wade Hampton Miller turned me on to John Pearse strings, and I have enjoyed them for several years now. In addition it is impossible to say how much I have learned, how much fun I have had, and how it encourages me to keep on "making music" and having fun doing it. As they say in AA, "keep coming back, it works!"

Same here - really appreciate the great advice and sage perspective from our long-time members.

A few things that really stand out for me:
  • Carbon fiber guitars - opened a new world for me
  • Music instrument insurance is a smart idea - saved me a ton of $$ in useless carrier 'insurance' over the years
  • Tips on great learning tools (Guitar Pro, Justinguitar, etc.)
  • Luthiers/techs in my new home base of Milwaukee
  • Play more, post less

First, was to get a Larrivee. Second was to humidify. Though ten years ago now, I wouldn't have known to humidify if I didn't read forums.

Great thread!

I'm not sure what the best for me is; there is so much helpful information shared here. I'm enjoying others' responses, though.

After watching her play for a minute, the teacher gently said, "Ma'am you have to actually press the strings down, not just put your fingers over them".
Was her first instrument the theramin?

Forum member mesa pointed me to a book called "Eat to Live". Changed my health and really my life to a significant degree. The rest is just guitars, not that it hasn't been quite enjoyable and useful.

I can't count how many times, when it was time to change strings, I could not remember what was on there in the first place, whether they were wonderful or lousy.

Some other poster here said he tossed the empty package in the case. Amazing how that simple, obvious idea has helped me.

That's what I do... and date it. Works well.

I dunno if it was the best advice I've received, but making a case humidifier out of those water beads and a perforated canister was pretty cool idea!

I have received a lot of good advice and tips reading and asking questions on this forum. The most helpful to me was from Scott (Charmed life picks). I posted that I've tried many, many different picks and they all slide and turn. He mentioned he puts white medical tape on the end. What a huge help that has made in my playing. It's cheap and works great.

It's probably something that I discovered on my own - that no guitar, capo, set of strings, bridge pins, pick, tuner, and anything else is better than your own perception of it, rather than the perception of others.

One time, many moons ago , someone posted that there was a professional musician about to go on stage and prior to his performance he went over the songs he was going to play in slow motion. Very slow and deliberate.

Once I get past the "where do I put my fingers" stage of learning a song, when I get to a part in a song that gives me trouble, I'll stop and then practice it in slow motion. I mean very slow.

It works.
