Default "I Got a Name" (Jim Croce cover)

"I Got a Name" is a 1973 single recorded by Jim Croce and written by Norman Gimbel and Charles Fox. It was not long after recording this song that Jim Croce and his excellent accompanist, Maury Muehleisen, tragically died in a plane crash in Natchitoches, Louisiana.

This is my cover. I am playing the song on my recently acquired Guild F512 12-string. I hope this song provides a little inspiration for some who might need it.

Thanks so much for watching.

- Glenn

Hi JM,

Well, you just made me laugh right out loud!

Thank you so much!

You know, I played this recording for my wife to get her opinion before I posted this, and she told me, "It was as if that big 12-string was driving the song!" And, yes, I think it was.

When I finished that song on the recording, I had given myself a headache. I think my adrenaline was up after doing that song over a few times before getting a decent take.

A guy has to sing pretty loud and with some pretty serious commitment to get up over that big 12-string!

Thank you again!

- Glenn

Nice job, Glenn!

Your voice is a good match for that Guild, and I enjoyed your version of this song quite a bit.

I also liked your take on "Time in a Bottle."

Great playing, great singing and great interpretation of the song. Other than that it stunk.

Excellent, Glenn, I liked it! Strumming usually bores me a little, but I love all your variations. That makes the song much more interesting. Very nicely done... especially the rapid chord changes at the end of the chorus. Great job...

Hi Glenn, that was great.

I have recently taken to playing music from my iPad thru my Fishman Loudbox Artist , really punches it out, with a great live-sounding reproduction.

I might take it to my next O.M , secretly plug in and mime along with you !

Glenn, this is one of my favourite songs and your version is beautiful. Love hearing a bit of grit in your voice as well.

I'm also quite jealous of your F-512, which looks shiny and sounds great.

Hi Kerbie,

Thank you for your thoughts!

Actually, I am usually bored by strumming, too, so when I do it, I am always looking for something to add interest. As it turns out, when Jim Croce and Maury Muehleisen recorded their original version, they had already added plenty of interest to the instrumental playing, so I could follow their lead.

Those rapid chord changes you've referred to are also in the original recording -- at least I think they are (I haven't listened to the original version for quite a while now...) -- and it takes a little practice to keep from stumbling over myself during those changes.

Thank you again for listening and commenting!

Hi Jon,

Well, your comments made me laugh! Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment, Jon.

I don't know though. I am quite a bit shorter than you; I don't know if my singing and playing is going to stand up to you very well. But you could try -- I would be honored!

- Glenn
