What is "played in"?
What is meant when someone describes a guitar as feeling or sounding played in?

The 'Honeymoon' period that comes before 'played out'.

Some relate it to a recent string change. Otherwise, I have no idea what a played-in guitar means.

The term is inherently nebulous. I suggest that when a new guitar has been tweaked to the owner's satisfaction, and he/she have become accustomed to playing it, that's when 'played in' gets brought up as if to suggest something quantifiable has happened to the instrument.

I saw this thread yesterday and was about to respond, thinking I had an answer, then I was flummoxed , I realised I didn’t, So I left it alone.
Glad to see all the great humorous replies, I guess AndyG’s reply is about right for a sensible answer. |

jumping into quicksand
Some believe wood is dead and it doesn't change unless you dent, saw or sand it.
Others believe when vibration and music moves along the surface and through the wood, it has an aliveness that reflects and creates an emotional response. Playing in means the wood, inert when assembled, develops improved resonance and tone after some period of time being played.

I believe you're on to something there... I have a few guitars, but one seems to be my favorite... I've tried a number of different strings, changed the tuners, and experimented with tunings till I'm happy with the results... I've never used the term "played in", but the guitar and I are definitely "in sync"... |
