The 1939 Martin 000-42 Clapton used on MTV unplugged. Led to a resurgence of small bodied guitars.

No, truthfully, I never considered getting a doubleneck Ovation. However, Alvarez-Yairi made a doubleneck wood-bodied guitar for a number of years, and one of the music stores in Anchorage had a few of them in their inventory during that period.

Two things dissuaded me, though: first, I took a couple of them down off their racks and played them. They weren't particularly good-sounding, frankly. The second reason was even more conclusive: they were huge, heavy and incredibly awkward to carry around, especially when in their cases.

So I give Ovation and Alvarez-Yairi kudos for being innovative and daring in their product designs, but those doubleneck instruments just weren't for me.

+1 - but I would question the small body comment.... A 000 isn't that small!

And IF you can guarantee that Johnson actually played what was then a relatively expensive guitar. Aside from two pictures there is no hard evidence that he played Gibson. As for 'iconic', what do we actually mean? 'Most visible'? If we're talking Bluegrass then naturally it will be either a D-18 or D-28. If it's Rockabilly it'll be a fat Gretsch G6120 of some description, Blues rock; the Les Paul, Jazz; the ES175...
Personally I feel that words like 'iconic', 'awesome' and 'hero' (essentially anyone who ever put on a uniform), are grossly overused to the point where their impact has been distilled into meaningless blandness.

Ah dear old Ralph. I used to have the occasional Sunday lunchtime chat with him in the Half Moon in Putney, where we both lived (along with Stefan Grossman, Sammy Mitchell, Bert Jansch and the rest of the 'Putney Mafia'!).

For earlier generations, something like the Gibson L-5 might have been the ideal. But the Martin D-28 has been the standard bearer for decades now, ever since the 1960's, if not earlier.

Lots of great candidates mentioned here!

I'll add Jimmy Page's "Stairway to Heaven" Harmony Sovereign H1260.

Default OP

When they OP asked about "iconic", I thought he meant "model" rather than an individual guitar and would have answered D18 or maybe D28. Other than Wade's reply and a couple that followed it, I see everyone else has interpreted the original question as applying to a single instrument. Maybe that's more fun.

I agree. I bought my first Martin because of The Kingston Trio. And don't forget the double pick guard!

So far we have left out Esteban.
