How do you compliment a pianist
Have an oppurtunity to play a gig on November 22nd with a pianist. Jazz standards. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to play behind the pianist. I would think straight away swing rhythm patterns would not necessarily work. Should I be comping most of the time? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Practice with the pianist. Decide how you are going to play each song. Decide on the style -- let it breathe or let it rip or..... You should know what you want to do with each song. I think you should be able to feel jazz, not just play it. Enjoy -- it sounds lke fun!

Stay out of the way.
Seriously, go to the library and find the piano/guitar duet record “Undercurrents” by Bill Evans and Jim Hall. It’s a text book study from two of the best and most sensitive accompanists and soloists in history. And it’s a gorgeous record. They did a second one together that is almost as good, but the tittle escapes me at the moment. |

How about simply... "Wow, nice playing Mr. Pianist"
......sorry ... couldn't resist. Bob

Actually I have heard the Bill Evans, Jim Hall cd about a year ago. Don't remember which one it was but the pianist I am playing with is the one who owns the CD. I will listen to it again. Thanks for the help guys.
