Smile Thanks Tim

Thanks for the info! John K mentioned some time back that he would like to do a Larsen Bros type guitar. Didn't they do something like this on a few? Of course, no CF then.

Seems like with the cantilevered FB extension and these buttress rods the entire top should be able to work better at making sound... John is going to do laminated sides, which should add to the tonal package!

And some extra high end should be nice as we are using Cedar/Hog for light weight and Warm Tone.

I kind of like that I will be able to see them thru the sound port. I am trying to talk JK into painting some flames on them. Hahahahahhaha

Cheers

Paul

Do you expect this shape to produce a tonal difference to the others, or was this more an aesthetic choice to offer a new shape? Excited to see the whole guitar!
Thanks for the kind compliment Mike. It was our goal to revise the shape of our current MacNaught (dred) to make it less boxy or squarish looking so we slightly rounded the upper and lower bout radii. We also pinched in the waist slightly to improve player comfort while playing in the seated position. I'll try to post a picture of a side by side comparison of the original body and the V2.

I don't anticipate a significant change in tone, volume or projection. However, that is purely based on my present opinion of the tap tones of the sound box because I don't have a finished guitar strung up yet...

You're thought process is partially on the right track Paul. I am sure John will build you a great guitar no matter what elements you choose. I will say, IMO, that laminted sides do not contribute much to the tone of the guitar. The double sides may be considered a structural element, much as one would view the laminated rim, on a drum. The rim supports and isolates the top and back.

Hi Tim and Paul. Paul Woolson does a full-cantilevered FB extension, with wooden buttresses, leaving the whole top free to vibrate. At least in my OO sized 12 string he built, I can feel the top fully "engaged"!

Looking good, Tim. Will like to see the body shape on the finished guitar.

Best,

Phil

Smile Thanks riorider

Thank you Riorider. That is what I was hoping for!

Tim, I misphrased on the sides. I just figure they will add to the structural rigidity, and allow the top and back to work as well as possible!!!

And, Tim I am looking forward to seeing this beautiful walnut all dressed up for the dance!
Cheers

Paul

Mike, Phil and Paul:
These are just some quickie pics but I think you will get the gist of the subtle differences between the two models. The MacNaught on the right is my serial number 1 from 1992. Its shape is very similar to a vintage D.

Now that both models are side by side and over laid on each other you will see the most dramatic change is in the pinched in waist of the V2 and slightly shorter overall length.

There are some other very small differences in the upper and lower bout radii but I'm sorry to say that my photographic skills don't capture them accurately.

Thanks Dennis.

Almost done binding...

For other builders viewing this thread I have a tip to share. I have always looked for a small micro chisel to trim miters in purflings but was never able to find one so I made one out of an old flat needle file. I cut off a short section of broom handle and used it for a handle on this chisel and it works great. Besides, the steel in the file holds a great edge too.

As I view this picture it makes me scratch my head and wonder why I went to this length to miter a purfling that is UNDER the fret board... that no one will EVER SEE???

Smile Invisible mitering...

Because that is the way it should be!

This is a fun thread, and a beautiful axe...

Cheers

Nice work, Tim.

You make routing the binding channels and knocking out miter angles with a chisel look so easy - but I know it's not. To me it's like dentistry; you don't really appreciate the effort until it's all been said and done. During the process OTOH...

Thanks Paul. There are so many little details in a build that many consumers never see. Its like sanding top braces, which makes me chuckle every time I do it. Its another one of those head scratching moments for me... WHY, Why, why? But your explanation explains my OCD in a way that rings true, at least for me...
