McPherson - 2k increase?
Sooo...the guitar gallery in Nashville is giving a heads-up that all in-stock McPherson's will be going up $2,000 in price as of November 1 per the manufacturer. Does anybody know if this is ALL McPherson guitars across the board?

No offense, but I thought they were already overpriced, by a LOT!

To each his own I guess. I've honestly never had an opportunity to play one.
I was planning a day trip to Nashville sometime in November or December to play some at Gruhn's and Guitar Gallery (as well as some other high-end makers as well), but with a pending 2k price increase, Matt McPherson has just guaranteed I'll never own one. Pity. I've been saving forever, but I would never pay more than what they're currently selling for. Looks like I'll be keeping my eye on Martin, Collings, Santa Cruz, Froggy Bottom, etc. |

I don't understand how this is beneficial to anyone but the dealer. The cost of goods on the in stock merchandise has not gone up, the transfer cost has not gone up, etc, but the selling price goes up 25%? I could understand a year over year price increase- not that much mind you, on inventory shipped after the price increase, but on inventory already sitting in the showroom? All this does is make the manufacturer look really bad and illicit responses like the above one. I never planned on owning a McPherson, but with this I can say I'll never own one.

I've been looking at some McPherson's and listening to lots of sound clips. But I've since deleted every bookmark. |

They seemed expensive for what you get. Lots of builders that seem to give you a lot more for your money. I'm sure a good chunk of the price tag is from dealers. They could be pricing themselves out of the market.

McPherson
I'm guessing that Matt McPherson is doing very well with his other business ("Mathew's, Inc.") and this probably allows him to ask whatever he thinks the market will bear for his guitars.

Just to clarify....McPherson Guitars are consigned to dealers under very strict guidelines regarding pricing and even the method that they can be shipped to customers. The dealers have nothing to do with this.

If I were saving that long and REALLY wanted a certain guitar, I wouldn't let $2000 stand in the way of continuing to save. But that's just me. |

Builders who sell direct cut out the middle man, which is where you can really save money. Sales people try to make this sound like a very risky investment.

I've played a few of their guitars. I'm not a fan. I don't understand what draws people to these guitars. I'm guessing they are doing this as a way to try and adjust perceived value? I don't believe that strategy will work for them, but it's their risk to take I suppose... Regardless I'd take a 300 series Taylor over a McPherson any day.

The difficulty is that I honestly don't know whether I REALLY want a certain guitar or not. But regarding this situation, there's a strong business principle involved that has nothing to do with the sound of a specific instrument. Raising the price $2,000 on a guitar that's been on a shelf for 2 1/2 years is a bad business decision, and enough of a deterrent that I will move on and remove it from consideration. Good for Matt and the business if they can make more money. They just won't make any from me. |

Perhaps if I were a one-guitar-man. A suddent $2,000 increase is 0.5-1 guitars in my book depending on type.

That is completely understood. However, it doesn't address raising prices on existing merchandise. Prices should only increase for newly produced models. To adjust for raw materials and labor cost increases or to reduce demand. I think the latter may have been accomplished.
