Default Audio interface question...

The one annoyance I have with my M-Audio interface is that when I plug in headphones for monitoring I have to unplug the external monitors or it'll play through both. Is this common for entry level interfaces? Is there a good one out there that will switch off the external monitors when you plug in your headphones?

Todd

Look around (both on the hardware and in the software) for a monitor mute switch or equivalent function.

This is typical of most interfaces, entry-level or otherwise. There are plenty of "monitor controllers" you can get to allow for quick muting. I also suspect there is a setting in the software to mute the main outs...make sure you have the latest software & check to see if there is a mute for the main outs in the software control.

It's typical of the lowest-end interfaces. My Tascam US800 has separate volume controls for headphones and speakers.

As does my Presonus 44VSL. As others have said though I bet there is a setting in the software that can allow you to mute the speakers while still monitoring thru the headphones.
