Quick Tonal Comparison X7-OS vs Shorty
I said that I would post a quick comparison between my Emerald X7-OS and Rainsong Shorty. Well, here it is! This is by no means scientific. I basically just sat in the same spot and played the same thing on each guitar. This is straight into audacity with no EQ or anything. Enjoy.

Thanks for the comparison J!!! To my subjective ears the Emerald has a more "old school" tone, where the Shorty had more harmonic overtone ( ringing )...
IMHO I would be happy with either a Masseratti or a Lamborghini!!! Kudos Amigo...

I think the Emerald sounds more rounded and Martin like. The Rainsong is fuller and more balanced to my ears and sounds very Taylor like. I hear the bass more distinctly on the Shorty but the guitars are more similar than they are different in the mids and trebles.

They both sound nice but the Shorty has a cleaner sound. The X7 was a little muddy in comparison.

Excellent demo. Obviously the little X7 didn't hold up too well while being strummed but it sounded decent enough played finger style. Not bad for a 3/4 size super shallow body guitar with minimal bass response. Nice job JG.

Hi Jgillard,
Great thread!!! I would say those recordings align perfectly with my previous statements on the X7-OS. The guitar handles the fingerstyle much better mainly because I believe it handles the mids better. The bass notes and trebles sound weak and hollow in comparison. With the Rainsong, the overall musicality is much more balanced across the spectrum. When you strum you involve more strings than just the mids which is why I think the sounds starts to loose musicality. Overall, I found fingerstyle on the X7 satisfactory enough for my "fingerstyle" needs and when combined with the ergonomics, portability, and carbon fiber construction -- I think there is a lot to like about the guitar. That said, IMO the Rainsong simply sounds better on every level and based on that recording would handle strumming and a capo much better. |

The sound comparison is valid, but I remind myself that it's an "apples" and "oranges" situation also.
Comparing two basic models: The Shorty is $650 more. The size is very different: depth 4.125 vs 3.5 width 15.25 vs 13.5 body length 19.5 vs 16.5 overall length 38.5 vs 34 Considering the size difference, the Emerald does well--but it can't defeat physics. So if the smaller dimensions of the Emerald are not of interest or value, and the extra $650 is not an issue, then the Rainsong is a very good choice and it does sound very good. |

These things are all in fun. They are completely different guitars. For the x7-os competing with guitars of similar sizes it holds it's own in my opinion and surpasses many! It also is such a comfy guitar that it's fun to play.
