If you have access to a strobe tuner (many piano shops will let you rent these...otherwise $400-2000) you can tell what octave a paticular string is being played.

So pick out the lowest notes in a song compare the note with your own guitars tuning and you can pick it up fairly easy.

I wish I had one of these when tuning my third string on my 12.
