Wow Juston, that has got to be one of the most beautiful guitars I've ever looked at. Really clean lines, no sprakly "bling" to speak of, but the wood itself is bling. Way cool! I'm slobbering over your build! I'd like to hear recordings of it when you get it. Maybe a Youtube video? Thanks for sharing your guitar.

My wood will be Carpathian (probably) and Cocobolo. Trim materials similar to the one in the pictures. Mike is really familiar with the sound that I want, and he recommends the Carpathian. Mine will have the rounded cutaway. To my ears, the Meridian has a smidge more bass presence, and the highs are a bit more clear than they are on my CX, which is cedar/cocobolo. By the way, I was at McCabe's over the weekend and that JX is back out on the floor after a setup and string change. Sounds and plays great! The best sounding instrument in the store, IMO, followed by a GREAT sample of LJ's mahogany Martin. Jenn Jenn Last edited by jennconducts; 11-09-2009 at 02:50 PM. |

Oh, wow! I need to get over to McCabe's ASAP. Thanks for the heads up.

Me too - used Baraniks don't come along all that often ...

I'm pretty sure that it's new. He places new instruments in a couple of stores, including McCabe's. As I recall, it's Engleman/Cocobolo. Airy highs to die for.

Thanks Jenn - Don't know why I just assumed it was used. Cocobolo is Mike's "standard" tonewood according to his website, so I bet you are right. I am going to shoot over tomorrow under the guise of a little "business trip" to take a look. Was kicking around a JX build with him earlier this year before the economy kind of took the wind out of my sails ...

Bump. Just got some pics of the Coco Negro, though it has yet to be sanded. See OP.

Well, things appear to be moving on my Meridian. I asked Mike to do something a little more understated than the Meridian in my OP, and he came back with some pretty stellar - and striking - mockup photos of an idea he had to incorporate some greenish lignum vitae in the design.
I was hesitant at first; green is a color I don't usually like on guitars. But in combination with the wenge and black cocobolo, I think it looks stunning. Not to mention extraordinarily unique. He tells me both the cocobolo and lignum vitae will change color once cut but will change back to black (from gray) and green (from yellow) after exposure to air and UV. Here's some freshly cut lignum vitae, along with an example of the same wood once oxidized. The back joined . . . And a mockup of the peghead veneer with the spalted koa.

This close-up gives you a really good sense of cocobolo. It's perfectly quartered with nice, tight grain. Looks like it was meant to be turned into a great guitar.

Looking great, Juston!! I can tell you that mine (pictured in the OP for those of you who don't know) just keeps getting better and better!
And I can't say enough about that blue spruce.. Crystalline is the best description I've come up with. The highs just *sparkle* without sounding thin or clanky. I'm all buckled in for the ride! rr/Phil |
